They stare at each other. Chris feels his heart break and reform in his chest.

He's lying there, displaced in time, bleeding with an infected gunshot wound, and he's asking after Claire.

Chapter Summary:  Elluin Lavellan and Leliana discuss the past and what it means to be a Hero. A chapter dedicated to Elluin's personal history.

"The gods don't give a fuck about me. Human or Elvhen. They never have."

"How can you say that when the proof is in your hand?"

The whispers of the rage demons reached her ears from the Fade, tempting her to let the anger flow through her veins and poison her words, but Elluin lifted her mental barriers and rejected their offering. Leliana did not deserve her rage. No one did.

"Proof of what?" she asked through clenched teeth. "Leliana, the gods have failed us. This is the work of a mortal being, not a god. It's magic. Not something divine."

“You may be right. But Andraste must have sensed our struggles and sent a hero to save us all. You.”

A hero. They called her a hero? For what? For clinging to her life? This discussion did nothing to bring her solace. It was time to end it. No matter how much she liked Leliana.

“If your Andraste thinks I’ll sacrifice myself like Aris — the Hero — did, then she is a fool. I won’t throw myself into death’s arms as easily as that child did.”

Leliana slumped her shoulders and her gaze flickered from Elluin's face to the ground, as if searching for a better argument in the melted snow.
