Lucy! - One Piece Chapter 789

So...Let’s talk about villains and heroes and spoilers

Doflamingo went up in my villainy count this chapter when he did his puppet-control on Rebecca so she would kill Viola (who he’d pinned in place).  I’m not sure why, since he’s done pretty brutal things already. I guess it was the first time he had manipulated characters I had grown attached to through the arc and simultaneously seemed to be doing it to torment both of them. 

And I think the other part of it was that it fit with Dofamingo’s character. He does not take betrayal well, especially when it comes to loyalty to his family. So the fact that Viola betrayed then would, in Doflamingo’s estimate, merit a fitting demise. Which is having her niece kill her.

It was just really cruel and tragic. 

There was a lot in this chapter about heroism. Or at least, it got me thinking about the development of how the world perceives Luffy. In the last couple arcs, there’s been a tendency of citizens relying on Luffy to save them; he’s their last hope and their hero.

But how does Luffy perceive it? Didn’t he say that didn’t want to be a hero because heroes have to share meat? How does his role as a hero in the eyes of many kingdoms intersect with his identity as a pirate?

Gatz addresses this and King Riku did earlier - the people of Dressrosa would usually not support or trust a pirate, but Luffy’s done the most for them by confronting Doflamingo. What consequence (if any) will there be as a result of Luffy’s heroism for the different kingdoms he visits (whether intentional or not) when it comes to the climax of the story? 

And if Luffy’s legally a pirate, (1) what kind of message does his constant saving of kingdoms say about the state of the World Government’s policies, their power (via the Marines), and the social condition of justice in their world? (2) how would his capture by the Marines (since he’s a legal criminal) be viewed by the kingdoms and people he’s helped?

Additionally, how do the current arcs since the time-skip compare to those earlier? Like Luffy as a hero who saved Alabasta vs as a hero in Dressrosa? In Dressrosa the citizens have been told twice that Luffy is a pirate and he’s going to save them. In Alabasta, none of the citizens knew about Luffy’s role. 

With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see what the Marines do at the end of this arc. Since they were the ones who arrested Crocodile at the end of the Alabasta Arc, even if they hadn’t been able to stop him.

Also, Gatz' speech felt...overdone or a bit tedious, but then I think he was trying to rile up Doflamingo to help Rebecca and Viola. 

Luffy and Law work well together, imo.

Chapter 789- Lucy!!

This is adorable. It’s so weird, but wonderful at the same time.

The birdcage is almost closed. The wreckage around it is immense. I can’t see how Dressrosa will recover from this. That is, if they last long enough to see the day.

Never before has a woman looked so ferocious, passionate, and vulnerable. She needs to, but cannot stop.

His associates. Trebol losing track of Sugar, Vergo messing up at Punk Hazard, all these major dents in Doffy’s master plan, he should be angry, but godamnit he isn’t. Because they’re his family, and no matter how mad you get, you have to forgive your family. Unless they do something despicable. Like betray him. As in Corazon’s case as well. These panels showcase Doffy’s morals in such a clear light, where they had always been, for the most part, cloudy. He cares so deeply for his family, who raised and cared for him the stead of his father and mother. Yet he detests those who betray him, examples being his father and brother. It’s so clear cut. Such a complex man; you’d think it would be deeper. But really, he’s as childish as Luffy in some aspects. Those who have wronged him deserve to die a painful death.

Doffy controlling Rebecca against her own aunt is interesting. And very intellectual of him. Rebecca, who’d been keeping blood off her hands at her mother’s will, is being forced to kill her mother’s kin, at her mother’s (at the base of it) killer’s will. As well, the entire country fell because of her grandfather’s actions, which are strikingly similar to hers now. Causing the entire cycle to repeat. It’s so complex, and very ironic. As horrific as it is, it’s so fitting.

Gatz popping up again? And who is this ‘star’ he speaks of? (This entire sentence is sarcastic if you could not tell.)

And who might that be? (Still being sarcastic)

I don’t think so, Cabbage. And how did you just notice? I thought you were keeping an eye on him! So much for that, I guess.

Yes, Luffy. The current ‘star’ of the Colosseum that is the Birdcage. Our journey begins and ends with a ‘Colosseum’ huh? A fight to the death (or eventual surrender of the opponent, which is very unlikely in Doffy’s case).

Rebecca is so desperate. She can’t be independent this time. She has to rely on someone else to save her. But that’s ok. She’s doing her best. She’s still resisting Doffy (even though it’s only a matter of time before she gives in)

(Side Note: Awww.. Luffy and Law, side by side. So cute~~)

Luffy promised Dressrosa. He will stand for them. He will rescue them. He will avenge them. He is the light that will bring forth their new age.

It is so showy. But it’s a huge morale-booster. 1 Shot, this man is claiming. 1 shot will end this all. It’s so gutsy. It’s so... Luffy.

Yes. That wide, smiling, flamingo mouth. It’s impressive that they’ve managed to restrain the Birdcage for this long. Even Zoro, who has such a high endurance, is faltering. Luffy needs to hurry up. It makes me wonder what would happen should everyone stop pushing. Would the Birdcage just... Snap them all? They’re putting in so much effort, surely Doffy is putting in the same amount? If one of the opposite sides recede, the other side is automatically going to overcome it.

The execution ground for the false king. It is somewhat poetic. But it implies that Doffy will perish today. But by who’s hand? Luffy’s? Law’s?

The fighters are falling. Everything is beginning to rest on that ‘Star’ called Luffy. And indeed, Mancherie is to be thanked for how long everyone has been lasting. But she’s at her end. Everything is falling onto Luffy. It so seems that no one else can hold the burden any longer.

Chanting his name? It truly is the Colosseum. And there is only 1 person everyone is rooting for. 

She loves her so much. It’s so beautiful. It’s so horrific. It’s so ironic. They are so sorry for hurting each other. Viola is telling Rebecca that her blood is not shed out of Rebecca’s will. It’s out of Doflamingo’s. It’s alright. It doesn’t count. Keep up your mother’s will when I’m gone. 

Yes! Luffy! He’s so battered, but he’s still repaying his bento debt.

Viola’s safe too, at the grace of our beloved Traffy. Yay~

Luffy is furious. Luffy is so furious. 

This chapter was so horrifically ironic. From beginning to end. Everything is running into a cycle. The ‘Colosseums’, the puppeteering with Rebecca and Viola, it’s all so calculated. And Doffy’s nature comes through again, but without the fog behind it. It is clear. Since his father ‘betrayed him’, Doffy has had a problem with it ever since. Doffy’s morals have been layer out for all of us to see. And they’re so childish. He’s like Luffy in that aspect. Mancherie’s sacrifice is hitting it’s end. The pushers cannot keep the Birdcage from closing in on them anymore. They are tired. There is nothing they can do now but put their hopes and bets on Luffy, as is the Colosseum fashion. I am devastated that there will be no One Piece next week. But the anticipation that builds from here will only make it all worth the wait.
