Chara’s Past, how they fell - Do not reblog please!!
“They say that if you misbehave, the monsters will get you!”
“The monsters will eat you!”
“Please, the stories are nothing but lies. Why would a monster go after only children? An adult does more things a child should not, so by that logic, shouldn’t they be eaten?” Charlotte never understood the other children, why did they fear the rumours of monsters on the mountain? Adults used it all the time to keep them in place but Charlotte saw what adults could do. Theft, murder, saying bad words… Anything that they threaten a child with if they misbehave.
“Come on, Charlotte. I bet you’re just as afraid.”
“Charles, I am not a baby anymore. For your information, I have done a bad thing already and yet I live.” Charlotte said.
“Wait, you did? Prove it! Come on, you can’t say you did a bad thing and leave it. Back me up, Oliva.”
“He’s right. Come on, tell us!” Said Oliva.
“Fine, fine. I stole some money from my father.” Charlotte couldn’t help the unsettling grin with the shocked expressions from the two. It wasn’t something she didn’t expect but at the same time, it was pathetic in a way, why was it seen to be something horrible when worse was committed? “My father stole it from someone else so it wasn’t his anyway. It’s not like mother would care anyway.” Why should she lie for them to cover their backs? Sure, she could get into trouble and punished for it but at the same time, if they get caught it’s their fault.
“In any case, I stole from him and yet here I stand. No monster has come to eat me. If anything it’d be a blessing in disguise if one were to come down here, we need more fun. We can only wait with patience I suppose.” Patience was the only thing she held close to her. If she waited till she was older, she could leave this dump of a village and leave home to somewhere she could call home. “Don’t give me that look! None of you are as innocent either, I saw Oliva ta-”
“Hey! How about uh… If you don’t believe in the monsters. Why don’t you go up there yourself?” Changing the topic. While Charlotte wouldn’t usually do it, or let someone change topics that easy, she instead shrugged with a grin.
“Fine. I will. I’ll sneak out of home tonight and do it. Father and mother are going out again anyway, so I needed some fun.” She knew the other children thought she wasn’t going to do it, or fail to do so. She knew what they really thought of her. She was kept around to be the laugh, to male them feel better about their lives, as much as with the other people in the village but at least she could think of them as partners, even if it wasn’t the best.

Climbing up the mountain was easy, it did take a while though, longer than she thought it would but that was okay. A little patience didn’t harm anyone, especially since she can go to the mountain and come back unharmed. Charlotte stood at the mouth of the mountain and walked in, curiosity getting the better of her, maybe she should have taken the other two? But if she had, then they’d call her out on being scared which she was not.
“Should have brought a light…” A lamp would have been best, it was pitch black in these caverns, but no sign of monsters. “I knew they were made up.” Charlotte turned and made her way back out when many things happened at once. One, she didn’t feel anything underneath; two, the falling and then black.
“It sounds like it came from over here…” A voice? Charlotte could just about open her eyes as she looked for the source feeling nothing but pain. “Oh! You’ve fallen down, haven’t you?” She could only nod in shock, fear and pain. She wanted to run, but her legs didn’t respond, her voice failed her due to the shock and fear of seeing it! A monster! They did exist! Was it going to eat her?
“Are you okay?” Was she okay? It was concerned for her health? She nodded but remained cautious, maybe it would leave her if it thought she wasn’t vulnerable…
“Here, get up.” It held its arm for her to hold. Maybe it wasn’t bad, it-he seemed concerned for her. Charlotte took his hand and leant on him as she walked slowly with him, trying not to make too much noise from the pressure she was putting on her leg.
“Char-” She wanted to say her name, it was the least she could do for this monster for helping her, but something stopped her. She was with the monsters. Legend said that anyone who met the monsters never returned. Was this a new life for her? Did it mean she would forever be down here? “Chara. My name is Chara.” A new life.
“Chara, huh? That’s a nice name” He smiled at them, a genuine smile that filled them with something they never had on the surface. Hope. Is this what monsters really were? Kind and thoughtful? So why were they hated and an old story to keep children in line? Could they stay here with the monsters? Seeing him, after their initial fear… It made it clear to them that they didn’t want to be put with the village, they wanted a new life. Be a new person… A monster perhaps?
“My name is Asriel.” Asriel. It was a lovely name and it seemed that he meant it too, not a lie like the one they gave him. It wouldn’t be a lie necessarily, not if they went by it down here. “Come! I’ll take you to mom, she’s great at healing magic, you’ll feel better in no time! She can even cook a pie if you’re hungry! She makes great Cinnamon pies! Dad can help too! He’s not that good at cooking or healing but he tells good stories and I like listening to them to help me sleep.” Just hearing him talk about his family made them want to be a part of it, it was more than what they got at home…
“I would love that, Asriel.”
