hi! I'm working on a scene where a character mentions their vitiligo (in a casual, off-handed way), and I thought it might be good to ask about words to describe it? i.e are there certain words to describe it that you would prefer, or alternatively, that you would consider off limits?
Make sure to treat it like any other physical trait is the main thing
As for specific words you can use a variety of things such as: Spots, patches, and even speckled if its a smaller/less dense area.
For example(s):
The boy had tanned skin with small white patches of vitiligo on both sides of the corner of his mouth, in a nearly but not quite symmetrical pattern.
The girl was close enough to his face so that now he could see the speckled edges of the missing pigment around her large brown eyes.
They picked at a spot on their arm in embarrassment-- a subconscious habit it seemed. Sam wondered if the paler spot on their friend's arms was caused by the picking, or if the picking was subconsciously drawn to the spot because of its difference to the surrounding skin...
