hiya💜💙🩵 so I love to hear more about your Bell
[😶🌫️This post is a small process note about creating my BOCW OC. Thanks to Rosie's warm interest, I've decided to share a few pieces here—even if they still feel a bit rough.]
<Small Character Sketches with a bit of Backstory>
BOCW OC - Maica Lydner (My Bell)
My Bell is… well, under never-ending construction.🚧😆
And I think she'll stay that way. LoL.
Still, there are a few things I can say for sure.
Her hairstyle was inspired by Nadia Comăneci’s look from the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It reflects a visual trend from the Cold War era that was seen across much of the world. To give it more character, I added cartoonish touches, flicked ends and volume, mostly around the lower part of the hair.
Comăneci was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Games. (The photo on the right depicts Nadia Comăneci in 1980 and 1976.)
But under the weight of a communist regime, constant surveillance, and a loss of purpose, her talent nearly faded. She fought hard to return, and made it to the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Though that event was clouded by allegations of biased judging from the Soviets, Nadia later said that the 1980 Games were more meaningful to her than Montreal. Public opinion often labeled her as "loved and used," but I see her as someone who overcame adversity. Eventually, she moved to the U.S. and began coaching young athletes.
In many ways, she was shaped by the system—pressured, molded, and monitored. Her story resonates with the Cold War setting of BOCW, and her autobiography left a lasting impression on me.
Creating a character is harder than I thought.
So yeah, My Bell still feels rough around the edges—and honestly, a little embarrassing.
[🍂September - Animation-style coloring and palette test (Prototype)]
Her initial design had a boyish and cold impression. I did share a prototype back in late August, but it was mostly covered in military uniform—so there wasn't much to reveal. (That version was more of a variation on the Duga scenario than a proper character showcase.)
These sketches from September were just casual doodles—not exactly helpful, lol. Mostly, they were me trying to pin down her look before it slipped away again.
...😂🤣Back then, working on her felt frustrating—but looking at this now, it honestly makes me laugh.
[🎃October – Abandoned Designs & Freestyle Bell]
By the time October ended, I had almost given up on her design... If you happened to see that bizarre comic I posted around Halloween, you probably know what I mean.
It was stitched together from a bunch of abandoned doodles that I lightly cleaned up and turned into a story. I gave both Adler and Bell lion ears and threw them into a completely chaotic plot. It made no sense—but I had so much fun giggling to myself while making it.
The whole point of that doodle? Just to mess with Adler. 😝
[😵💫November – Eternal Wandering]
My art style tends to shift with my mood, so wandering has always been my companion. As soon as November began, I found myself imagining Adler and Bell's first meeting.
I tried to capture it in a sketch.
In canon, Bell was shot by Arash.
And in my version, when she woke up... well, unfortunately, Adler's head looked like a giant orange lump. And that's how she had her first encounter with a pumpkin.
My Bell refused to eat at first. But maybe, like E.T. in a Spielberg movie, she nibbled on a few M&Ms.
And when she did, Adler raised an eyebrow.
Soon after, she would've undergone treatments—drugs, conditioning, whatever it took to make her the perfect subject. That awkward first encounter? Probably overwritten by something else.
Bell looked at Adler like a bird seeing daylight for the first time. She trusted him. Followed him.
In the early safehouse scenes, I got the impression that the player was treated like a mascot puppy. Not because they were adorable, but because someone needed to keep an eye on them. So maybe Bell was handled like a child at first—then trained into a weapon.
And the most dangerous weapon of all? One that carries innocence.
That's what I think of when I think of my own Bell.
