I was taking Shakespeare quizzes character quizzes and keep getting Desdemona as the character I am most like. Should I be worried?

I don’t see why you should be! I mean, I wouldn’t take those kinds of quizzes too seriously anyway, but Desdemona is a pretty cool result: she’s a sexually independent and intelligent woman who’s not afraid to go against her parents and society to get what she wants; she’s full of faith, love and compassion in a world dominated by male violence, and she sticks to what she chose in spite of everything (though perhaps she goes too far in this). 

Desdemona may not be the best role model of how to act in an abusive relationship, and her style is probably not the fashion now when people are valued more for being strong when they call others out. And actually, if Emilia’s anything to go by Desdemona’s not a typical case by early modern standards either: ‘Why, we have galls: and though we have some grace / Yet have we some revenge’ (5.1.92-3). Women weren’t expected to take everything their husbands did to them patiently, and in most early modern plays, wives don’t take their husbands’ foolishness lightly. But there’s a reason Shakespeare chooses to portray this kind of character. There’s a lot to say for Desdemona’s staunch adherence to what she knows is true, and her desire to absolve Othello even to the end. She’s the perfect foil to Othello’s distrust, because she demonstrates a trust in her love that can’t be shaken. In other words, Desdemona is staunch in precisely the way Othello isn’t, and it’s powerful because she doesn’t retaliate or lower herself to match the world of distrust and hatred that infects both Othello and Iago.

You don’t need to be worried about being like Desdemona. Her story is only tragic because of the twisted world she lives in and circumstances beyond her control (read: Iago). In any ordinary world, there’s no reason that a good person like her would end up being killed by her own husband, and the avoidableness of the ending is precisely what makes Othello so tragic.
