i'm a massive fan of the dingles, as characters and as a family, i think they're fascinatingly flawed complex characters who are central to the lifeblood of emmerdale and have been for 30 years, and i always have 2 main questions when people post something like this.

(sorry, this will be a long ask, i just want to explain my thoughts)

1. why do you hate the dingles so much?

i can understand not being massive fans of them but there is often so much vitriol thrown at them that i don't understand when they're not much worse than any other family at the moment. plenty of other characters and families (including the kings) also have problems with hypocrisy and abuse, now and in the past, and i never see them receive the level of hate the dingles do, and when they do it tends to be on a character basis rather than as evidence of why their entire family needs to be culled. (and there is some concerningly classist, and, dare i say, white supremacist, rhetoric i've seen parroted in posts about them (not necessarily yours, but people who would agree with you), but i don't want to assume the worst, hence this ask)

plus aaron's a dingle, and he always will be (by blood and by name), and he often acts very similarly to cain and chas, for instance, who seem to get a significant portion of the hate.

2. what dingles would you kill off and why?

i can't think of any except maybe noah who aren't relevant, or any except cain who really deserve it. maybe marlon or sam could go but they're not significantly worse than jimmy. and if they did kill off a dingle or 2, wouldn't that just mean more screen time for the rest of the dingles? which wouldn't solve the oversaturation problem.

(i also don't actually think there's that many of them numbers wise, they just happen to be more prominent in storylines right now, which i can to an extent understand people's frustration with)

i don't mean any hate by any of this, and sorry to single you out, your post was just the latest i've seen. everyone's entitled to their own opinions and i agree with most of your other thoughts on the kings. i just really want to understand why you (and it seems 90% of the fandom on here) think this way about the dingles in particular.

hello anon! firstly, don't apologise for long asks! i find other people's opinions fascinating and i'm always happy to discuss something other than the robron intimacy discourse which currently plagues the fandom. secondly, i am definitely not a white supremacist lmao, happy to put your mind at rest about that one

'they're not much worse than any other family at the moment.' the family with the next highest amount of members is currently the kings with 5 (3 of which are children) and they aren't exactly up to much, so i think this is untrue

'i also don't actually think there's that many of them numbers wise' okay so i looked this up based on the current characters section of emmerdale wiki and these are my findings based on the listed 71 characters

dingles by surname: 16 other dingles by blood: 8 non-dingle surname but married to / dating dingles: 8 direct in-laws of the dingles: 7 that's already 39/71

of those remaining, you can take away 12 non-dingle children (i've counted ivy as a dingle for the sake of the sake) who rarely get storylines / screentime so that's now 51/71

that means only 20 of the adult characters aren't directly linked to dingles. of those 20, both dawn and jimmy have been confirmed to be axed, with rumours circling that billy may leave with dawn. and she will no doubt take her 3 non-dingle children with her too. only 8 of the current characters are not white (which will go down by 2 if billy and evan leave)

my desire for the dingles to be 'culled' is more due to the overwhelming number of them than anything at this point. if they keep axing non-dingles, there'll be no affairs / romances they can do without reverting back to good ol' incestdale. and there'll be no characters left to extort / threaten / whatever them because it'll only be dingles and they don't tend to do that to their own

also, if i may make a generalisation here... a lot of the fandom on here haven't seen non-robron / pre-robron emmerdale, so they don't necessarily know the lore of characters like jimmy, kim, jai, eric, etc. who have all absolutely done terrible things in the past! i'm not denying that and i'll happily ramble about it some other time. the dingles get a lot of 'vitriol thrown at them' in relation to how they treat aaron / robert in any given storyline which is fine but i do agree some of it is harsh

personally, i really like chas. her main character flaw is choosing men over her kids and while i couldn't imagine doing it, i like the consistency and the messiness. i also love belle, caleb, charity and mandy to name a few dingles.

however, my desire to axe characters is dependent on them fitting at least one of these two criteria: boring or insufferable

dingles i would axe: cain, noah, vinny, sam, lydia, marlon dingle adjacents i would axe — bear, rhona, jacob other characters i would axe — joe, rodney, eric, graham, vanessa / johnny, gabby / thomas

those are personal opinions based on who i think have run their course, i wouldn't want to see more of, i find irritating, etc. not everyone has to agree and that's fine. they don't all have to die either; i'm happy for some to take some time off and come back when there are storylines for them. it'd save itv paying them all every week but not using them

it could also make way for some new characters aka more women and poc. give us kammy's seven sisters! they could hire up-and-coming actors who would be significantly cheaper than their current veteran actors

killing off dingles would mean more screen time for the other dingles yeah, but that's fine. not everyone with the surname dingle should be excommunicated from the village. i'd love to see a story of belle navigating losing her brothers after losing her parents. or aaron properly becoming the head of the family. or charity losing her son. or april processing being an orphan. those are just off the top of my head. because they're interesting storylines that would showcase the talents of the remaining dingle actors who don't otherwise get enough time to shine in the throes of caindale

as for aaron being a dingle, this is true. he's very much chas' son and cain's nephew but he's kind and empathetic and loyal in ways they've often proved not to be. i also think (hope) he's going to take the sugden surname when he and robert remarry which won't stop him being a dingle but it'll help boost the numbers for other families, aka the longest running emmerdale family the sugdens

aaron and robert aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but they're also the central characters in the fandom and therefore people are going to look on them more favourably (apart from the die hard antis). i think it's called 'shipping goggles' or something? and it helps that they're queer representation with a rich, iconic history as well

Hey, I'm going through your character stat charts for DoS characters - mainly to see where my own OCs would fall in comparison - and wondered what category is "Special". In the databooks and narutopedia that slot is for Handseals which is fairly straight forward but Special is a bit more vague. Is it character/clan specific techniques (sharingan, sealing, kyuubi, healing) or something else?

Those were a lot of fun to make for sure, so I'm glad they're still relevant!

Yes, when I looked at the original narutopedia stats, I thought handseals was a weird thing to include because I feel like expertise at handseals doesn't necessarily make you a better shinobi? Because you've either mastered the jutsu to the point where you don't need handseals (ie, going off the theory that handseals and yelling the name is a focusing technique for less experienced shinobi) or you're doing techniques that don't need any at all--as you said--either sealing, or a bloodline limit, or a jinchuuriki thing, or a partnership with either summons or Inuzuka ninken or the Aburame kikaichu.

For something like healing I think I largely split the load of that across intelligence and ninjutsu, unless it was something extremely rare or near impossible to do to the point where it is in excess of intelligence or ninjutsu -- so some of Tsunade's or Kabuto's medical abilities I would translate as points in Special instead.

RUNNING SPEED   —   8 / 10 - She can be fast when she needs to be though the need to sprint full speed doesn’t come up all that often. 

RUNNING ENDURANCE   —   10 / 10 - She’s built to endure, not to say she can’t get winded, but she can keep up for quite some time.

LIFTING STRENGTH   —   5 / 10 - Physically she’s not going to be lifting anything super heavy. Though mentally...10/10 as she can throw rather large objects with her mind but the bigger the object the more strain upon her energy and body. 

CARRYING ENDURANCE   —   4 / 10 - Don’t expect her to carry much of anything for long. She likes her hands free.

JUMPING ABILITY   —   8 / 10 - She’s got those feline reflexes and agility in her training. 

THROWING STRENGTH   —  10 / 10 - Her weapons are throwing based, it takes skill to toss a fanblade hard enough to slice someone though she also partially controls their movements and direction with her mind.

Sometimes she doesn’t care to be polite or ease the flow but she’s an A class manipulator for damn sure. So she’s got it when she wants to have it that is. When it comes to reading others she probably knows what you want before you are even aware of it yourself. 

EXTROVERSION   —   3 / 10 - She’s pretty introverted, even if she does like to show off at times. But that has nothing to do with Extroversion really...she hates being around mass amounts of people. 

MORAL COMPASS   —   5 / 10 - She’s pretty neutral here. Nothing is black and white and she might definitely do things to benefit herself. Not to say that certain things may not haunt her down the road. 

EMPATHY   —   4 / 10 - She can emphasize when she truly cares about someone otherwise she may shut it off completely. Emotions are distracting after all. 

EXTRASENSORY ABILITY —   10 / 10 - Her senses are very keen and precise, not to mention her telekinetic and telepathic abilities. 

EMOTIONAL ENDURANCE   —   9 / 10 -  This is tricky because whether its enduring or ignoring is the bigger question. I’d rate it 9 for endure because wither way she’s able to push through emotions until she is safe to let herself feel them. She can hide them or shut them off completely but this always leads to volatile outbursts and breakdowns later down the road. Nothing can stay in forever. 

COPING ABILITY   —    8 / 10 - She’s fantastic at coping, maybe sometimes a bit dramatic and it all goes to hell if she hits that breaking point. 

TENDENCY TOWARDS ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR   —   7 / 10 - She’s manipulative more than abusive, but if she’s interrogating or paying someone back it could get a bit nasty. 

TENDENCY TOWARDS VICTIM BEHAVIOUR   —   3 / 10 - Sometimes she feels she’s been victim to Hojo but she doesn’t exactly let it consume her. If anything it fuels her own anger. 

LEVEL OF DENIAL   —   10  / 10 - She literally swims in the sea of denial. 

PROTECTOR COMPLEX   —   10 / 10 - If she loves you then the person who hurt you is dead, or worse..... Count on that. 

DAMSEL COMPLEX   —   0 / 10 - She’s no damsel in distress, she’ll hurt you bad if you cross her. Mentally or physically you won’t be the same. 

EMOTIONAL INTIMACY  ( WITH PARTNER )   —   10 / 10. When she does find that rare partner it’s everything to her. She can confide in them and share her heart and you can expect to be able to do the same with her. 

EMOTIONAL INTIMACY  ( WITH FRIENDS )   —   5 / 10. It’s all or nothing with her, but a friend is trusted enough for her to at least be able to listen and share some things. 

EMOTIONAL COMPREHENSION   —    10 / 10 - She understands others probably more than she understands herself and that’s an area that can get confusing. 

TENDENCY TOWARDS PANIC   —    1 / 10 -  She really doesn’t panic, in most cases she’s calm and collective. Though she can panic if she’s having a volatile moment, it just isn’t often.

I love some good character building via stats and numbers xD have you thought of making headcanon pokemon stats for team7? Like attack, defense, HP, etc. You could do something like use the eeveelution stats, where theyre all 525 total, just different distributions of 130/110/95/65/65/60.

I FORGOT POKEMON STATS WERE A THING I COULD APPLY TO THINGS OUTSIDE OF POKEMON!

And given how beautiful radar charts are (both DoS and Pokemon) this does sound like a thing I would be really into (and something I could use to distract myself from other projects :P)

I think the main sticking point is that, well, are we talking canon DoS or the Pokemon!AU that I have?

Because I could just translate the character stats I already have into the pokemon stats as best I can using their (CStotal/40) x (max total PS [700 so long as we’re not including the Legendary/Mythical/weird Pokemon... although arguably I think it’s only the Mega-Evolved versions of Garchomp, Metagross, Salamence, and Tyranitaur that are 700?]) for their respective totals.

Not that I don’t love the idea of making them all Eeveelutions (because I am so sentimental about the Eevee line) but in my Pokemon!AU none of Team 7 even have Eeveelutions and if anything I’d want to incorporate their respective Pokemon teams’ stats instead? Like, maybe taking the ranges of their teams’ stats and using that as the base of the “translation” somehow...

But the canon DoS shinobi wouldn’t necessarily correspond to the Pokemon trainers so maybe using that as a “translation” base would be the same as switching languages in order to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius--unnecessarily adding another step.

HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are the Pokemon stats which is, unsurprisingly weighted towards combat; then again, pretty much so are the Naruto stats (Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, Genjutsu, Intelligence, Strength, Speed, Stamina, and Special) so that’s not exactly a point against it. I suppose the next step is to figure out which stats get converted to which. For example, while Speed obviously goes to Speed, does Stamina necessarily go to HP? Is Taijutsu both Attack and Defense while Ninjutsu and Genjutsu and Special go to Sp. Atk and Sp. Def? What happens to Intelligence?

Or am I leaning too much into translating my original Character Stats into Pokemon Stats?

I think I have to ponder this suggestion some more, anon.

I was just thinking of translating their combat abilities in the DOS world into pkmn stats! Theres also some basic guidelines in pkmn stats, like how only psuedo-legends have 600 total; mythical pokes have 100 in every stat (unless they have another form like shaymin), etc.

(2/2): I guess it’s a bit difficult to interpret since its now as detailed. Like, HP could be stamina, but special atk could be ninjutsu, but then what about their special abilities/genjutsu? Ooo I feel like this also opens up special moves that they could learn, like Phantom Force for Shikako to raise evasion because she can go into shadow state and just teleport. Ehehe sorry for the long asks, you just got me excited about it!

Pseudo-legends only have 600 total? ... is Garchomp a pseudo-legendary? Because its got 600 (and the Mega version has 700. Also Metagross, Tyranitaur, and Salamence)... although I guess there are some Legendaries (the original birds, for example) who have even less than 600.

600 is probably a better translation base than 700 anyway. And then I can use this site to get the maxes for each Pokemon stat (minus the legendaries, mythical, pseudo-legendaries, etc... although, WHY DOES BLISSEY HAVE MORE HP THAN GOD?)

Although, yeah, maybe translation is the wrong way to go about it and I should just from scratch come up with their Pokemon stats...

A/N: So I wrote this thing about that mission that Sakumo went on that was doomed to fail and thus start a war and I had to make teammates for him, and I already headcanon-ed that his teammates on that doomed mission were also his genin teammates (which is why he was especially reluctant to let them die for the mission). And then I got very fond of the OCs I made for Sakumo’s teammates and what kind of people they must have been (and why they distanced themselves from him after he saved their lives). And while I haven’t written for (In)Difference recently, I figured it would be a good idea to make the teammates more concrete, hence these stats.

So, introducing Hozue Kedouin of an anime-only clan of face copiers/shape shifters and Atsumi Kurama of another anime-only clan of genjutsu specialists.

I thought it would be interesting if, part of the reason why Sakumo was so famous individually--along with him just being a VERY good shinobi, that is--was if both of his teammates just specialized in essentially being invisible. His role on the team is as the obvious tank-y heavy-hitter while his teammates are more behind the scenes and sneaky. Unsure if this makes them a Team Two or a Team Five, according to my list of Konoha Team Designations, but I quite liked the set up and I think I’m going to keep it as such until otherwise disproven by canon (and even then, I may just ignore canon).

I mean, he IS a consistently “better” shinobi than both of his teammates and (if you’ll compare to the character stat posts for the Sannin and Team TenChiKoku) others in his generation as per canon (he individually had a reputation as strong as the Sannin during the Second War) but mostly because he’s very well rounded. He doesn’t fall into the trap of “specializing” in any given direction and also he's just very good physically.
