Concept Sketches for Races
The digital Sketches for the concepting are compiled on this page, but further development set he’s can be found in the Concept Sketches Sketchbook, as well as in the front of the Design Practices booklet.
Photo Manips! I'd really like to have some of these printed by the time we get to exhibition, also to get better at photo manipulation. I might attempt to do something by tomorrow morning but who knows!
The Q’arn
The Q’arn are the beast clan of Ephala, and make wonderful warriors and scholars alike. They are never wont to let new skills or knowledge go, and can become single minded in their pursuits.
There are four clans, The Ox, The Gull, The Turtle and The Fox.
History The Qa’rn are arguable the youngest race on the planet, and the fact that they are able to access elemental magic unfettered through their own bodies is a source of endless frustration for their Rival race, the Heralorn. Each Qa’rn is intrinsically born into their element, which corresponds with an animal clan. The clans are happy to mingle, although clans of opposing elements try to use a middle man for negotiations, in case of sudden influxes of mana.
Identity The four clans are: Ox - Earth Heron - Air Turtle - Water Fox - Fire
The Qa’rn hunt knowledge down as it were as important as the air they breathe, which has lead to full on fights with the Heralorn due to their reticent nature and unwillingness to share their scriptures.
Fashion The Qa’rn are inclined to incredibly bright colours that suit their element, and are unafraid to try out new things. They all tend to wear skirted garments and dresses to allow freedom of movement of oddly shaped limbs.
Abilities The Qa’rn are essentially bodies that tune elemental energies, and so are attuned at all times to their element, this means that they know exactly when to harvest certain items and where they will be in dungeons, should they line up with their element.
They also have clan specific abilities, the Herons can fly for short periods of time, Turtles have incredibly large lunge capacity, the foxes can see in the dark and the Ox have a very large amount of health.
Meidryn
The Meidryn are the merchants of Ephara
As a people, they are quick and witty, and can never let a bargain go.
They have a higher body temperatures than the other races of Ephara, and do have developed a lightweight reflective material that keeps the heat and sunlight from harming their bodies during long exposure.
History
The Meidryn are a populous and studious race of peoples hailing from the northern lands of Ephara. They run hotter than most of the other races of the land and are tenacious as they are boisterous. The Meidryn that we see in the south are usually merchants and tradesmen, come to make some coin bringing wares and harvests from the north to the warmer climates.
Others are sell swords and “retrieval experts” hired as dungeoneering aids for their quick work and no-nonsense attitude. They will do anything for good coin.
Fashion
Because of their higher body tempuratures, the Meidryn have developed a lightweight reflective material that they drape over themselves to protect themselves in the sunlight and keep the heat from getting too overbearing.
They otherwise like to wear little on the upper halves of their bodies and loose flowing garments on their lower halves, Skirts are worn by all genders as they are simple to construct and are well ventilated.
Identity
From the harsh and unforgiving climates of the North of Ephara are where the Meidryn hail from, and they place pride in the face that they can settle almost anywhere.
Earning the respect of one of these people can be done by showing strength and conviction in the things that one does.
Abilities Physical weapons suit this race more than the mystical ways of the Heralorn and the Qa’rn, and since they do not posses they unchallenged strength of the L’hallen, they favour light and ranged weapons such as Daggers and Bows. The Meidryn can always get a good deal, meaning they are extremely good at bartering.
L’Hallen
The L’hallen make up the largest population of the people on Ephara. Long and elegant, yet sturdy and strong, they make particularly good fighters and workers.
History The heavily forested Eastern Island of Et’Haran are where the L’Hallen hail from.
The tall, pointed eared peoples are surprisingly sturdy given their physique, but there is a hidden strength that makes them some of the hardiest tradesmen you could have in your employ.
Fashion The long limbed L’hallen favour conservative and simple clothing , going for unadorned and unembellished clothing. The race prefer cooler , grey colours and complimentary tones.
Identity The L’hallen are easy going and friendly, meaning they are one of the most liked races of Ephara. This can come as a bit of an annoyance when they are trying to put across a serious venture to other races.
Abilities Due to the nature of L’Hallen strength, they tend to wield heavy weapons like great swords and shields.
They also have an affinity for farming, and the quality of their grown ingredients are always slightly better than those of other races.
My process video for the Q’arn Race of Ephara.
They are one of the more populous races on the continent, second only to the L’hallen.
They are great scholars and inventors and scientists, and tend to spend their time gathering knowledge and then testing that knowledge. They can become quite short sighted when it comes to the saftey of themselves and others in the pursuit of new discoveries.
