Charles Stevens was one of several actors, like Iron Eyes Cody and Rodd Redwing, who made an entire career posing as an “authentic” or “legitimate” Native American actor. Hollywood felt mighty good about itself employing these men as an example of their goodwill and willingness to employ Indigenous actors for Indigenous roles. Cody, Redwing, and Stevens were all dead by the time the truth was revealed.
Stevens had a white father and a Mexican mother, but he and the film studios claimed his grandfather was the Apache hero Geronimo.
Of course, there’s a possibility his mother had Indigenous roots as so many born in Mexico do, however this is not what he nor the publicity department was getting at.
His father was a white sheriff from Arizona named George Stevens and nobody in his family had a connection to any Apache Nation.
