Eugene Pallette (The Mark of Zorro, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Adventures of Robin Hood)—Eugene Palette is the first person I think of when you say "character actor". He started out in silents and then transferred to soundies. He had a fat, quick, interesting face, with a gravel voice to match and an imposing demeanor that made him perfect for gangsters, wise mentors, fat cats. He is my personal headcasting for to play the Penguin instead of Colin Farrell.
