Equality as antidote against religious fundamentalism
Violence should have no place in our world as a means to fix the order of things, whether we're talking about the attacks of religious fundamentalists in Paris or Tel Aviv, the excesses of Israel's military incursions in Gaza or any of the many horrors that everyday take place in our world.
That said, I think the fundamentalist violence that many countries are facing now has built up over many years of injustice and inequality in the relationships between the West and its former colonies.
It's unlikely that will change with reactions such as seeking especial powers to thwart imminent terrorist actions. It's possible that such powers will prevent a few attempts, but sooner or later that won't be nearly enough to reduce the tidal wave of hate bred throughout decades of oppression, real or imagined.
There is no easy fix. If anything, maybe the current experience with Ebola in West Africa, with examples such as the UK's construction of clinics, is an indication of what can be done to really address the problem of fundamentalist violence: build schools, promote energy and food independence, talk to them as your equals.
The usual reactions to maintain the status quo will only fan the flames of violence.
