In1825 Crown Prince Frederick William received a farmhouse with land for Christmas from his father. With the expertise of architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who drew inspiration from archaeological studies at Pompeii and Herculaneum, Charlottenhof  became a proper Potsdam palace on the grounds of Sanssouci Park. The dining room’s precise and monumental decor was a direct reflection of excavations at Pompeii.

The Tent Room at Charlottenhof, the summer palace created by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel for Crown Prince Frederick William on the grounds of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, was inspired by other examples at Malmaison and Peterhof in Russia, a style fashionable int eh late 18th-century. The campaign-style furniture folded so it could be moved outdoors in warmer weather. The World of Interiors, December 1991.
