Christmas time was always festive at Hogwarts. Sam loved the holiday season, especially since so many wonderful things happened during the winter. The elves made wonderful cinnamon hot chocolate and the choir sang beautiful songs. Plus, the annual Christmas dance they held every year was also glorious and while Sam wasn’t much of a dancer, this year he really wanted to make it to the ball.
He got the idea to ask Kurt to the dance weeks earlier when it was first announced, but he was still trying to figure out how to ask him. Sam would walk past the Forbidden Forest, writing lists on parchment as he visited Coach Beiste His best friend Puck gave him ideas, but the Slytherin had ideas that Sam was sure would leave Kurt feeling like his best friend had completely lost his marbles.
It happened during Transfiguration class. Sam was sitting next to his partner, Jen, who was trying to turn a hat into a rabbit. Unfortunately for the blonde girl, Sam was not paying attention. He was too memorized by Kurt, who had already perfected his magic with his friend, Rachel.
“Ugh!” A frustrated groan sounded beside him and Sam turned in time to see a blue butterfly flying off. He looked at Jen with a raised brow.
“I take it that wasn’t supposed to happen?” He asked, struggling not to smile.
Giving a dramatic sigh, Jen put her wand down harder than necessary and looked at him. “How does ‘Turn this black hat into a white rabbit stat’ equate to a Blue Monarch Butterfly?”
Sam shrugged, helpless and at a loss for words. “Don’t ask me, I accidentally turned the last hat into a frog.”
Jen sighed and picked up her wand. “So, have you figured out how to ask Kurt to the dance?”
Sam frowned, she knew all about his crush, having constantly heard his declarations about how wonderful Sam was. So, it wasn’t a surprise when she asked. However, it reminded him that he just didn’t know what to do.
“I don’t have a single idea. Help?” He asked, giving her a sweet smile.
Jen shook her head. “I have nothing except maybe doing something really special using magic.”
Sam looked at Kurt. He had that smile on his face, the one that meant he was really happy. How Sam loved that smile. Kurt usually only smiled like that when…
Eyes lighting up, Sam looked at Jen. “I have an idea! Thanks Jen!” He hugged her tight, causing her to yelp slightly before patting his back.
“Anytime. Now will you help me get that butterfly back so we can turn it into a rabbit? I’d like to win those House points back from Slytherin.”
Sam nodded and went to conjure a butterfly net. On his way to get one, he bumped into Kurt.
“Oh, hey, Kurt!” Sam said with a silly grin plastered on his face.
“Hey Sam.” Kurt smiled, watching as the butterfly flew around. “I take it that’s yours?”
Sam shook his head but then realized, “Oh, sort of. I’ll get it back. I saw you got your rabbit. Great job.”
Kurt’s eyes lit up. “Thanks, Sam. I better let you get your project finished, I just wanted to talk to Mercedes.” Sam figured this was the reason Kurt had gotten up right as he came up behind him.
“Okay. Oh, hey, want to go to Hogsmeade this weekend?” Sam asked. His idea was still brewing in his head and he thought Hogsmeade would be a perfect place to begin his plan.
“Sure!” Kurt grinned and Sam could have sworn Kurt’s eyes lit up even more. That or he was just mesmerized by the beautiful hues as always.
He was only now sure that he definitely wanted to put this plan together.

On Saturday, Sam was ready. He had spent all of Friday afternoon putting his plan into action and had enlisted the help of his friends Jen, Tina, Rachel (after numerous pleadings not to tell Kurt of course), and even Santana, who only did it because Brittany was so excited about Sam’s romantic dance proposal. After he got a hold of a cloak, Sam put a spell on it to make himself invisible to Kurt. This way, he could be around and see Kurt’s reactions to what he found.
After hiding behind Honeydukes, Sam waited for Kurt to arrive. He would have woken up to a note asking him to come to Honeydukes where they had met for the first time. Smiling as he saw Kurt, who was dressed in his robes and looked as wonderful as ever, Sam was glad his trick worked since Kurt walked past and didn’t see him. He walked inside and Santana stood up to hand Kurt the next note. Sam knew it spoke about how they had reached for same jar of candy and even when Kurt made a snarky comment, Sam just joked right back at him. He saw a grin appear on Kurt’s face followed by a confused look. Sam had drawn two wands and an arrow pointing left with the words ‘GO HERE’.
The note only worked as long as Kurt was standing in a certain position and sure enough, he was standing as Sam expected him to. Kurt stepped out of Honeydukes and turned to the left. He walked a few paces before he was standing in front of Ollivanders’ wand shop. Sam saw him go inside and meet Rachel, who was grinning like an idiot and Sam only hoped she didn’t screw this up. The next note she handed Kurt told him to go to the place where Kurt had healed Sam. Underneath the words, Sam had drawn himself with a sling.
Sam wished he knew what Kurt was thinking. He probably couldn’t imagine what Sam was up to. Luckily, Rachel managed to hold up her end of the deal and sent Kurt on his way back to Hogwarts. Sam had gotten hurt on the Quidditch Pitch after a particularly brutal game. Kurt was the first one at his side and when he saw Sam was bleeding, he picked up his wand and said a spell to fix him up. He couldn’t heal Sam’s broken arm bone, however, so he still ended up seeing Madame Pomfrey.
Kurt went through the secret passageway back to Hogwarts and Sam followed. They made their way down to the Quidditch Pitch, where Jen was waiting with her broom. Grinning, Sam silently laughed hearing Kurt demand her to tell him what was up.
“Sorry, Kurt, I’ve been sworn to secrecy. Here you go.” She handed the note to Kurt before going off to presumably practice for the next game.
The note told Kurt to go to the place where they often had long talks, just the two of them, talks that extended their friendship. They had always confided in one another, because they both knew the other would never breathe a word of what was said to anyone else. Sam really valued that part of their friendship and he wondered if having that closeness could help lead to more. He only hoped it would.
The place Sam talked about in the note was a room he and Kurt found when they got stuck on the Staircases in second year. They found their way there when the stairs changed and took them away from The Great Hall.
It wasn’t anything special, just a room with nothing but a couple chairs, but it was comfortable and so far, no one else knew about it but the two of them. However, it had become a place of refuge, a space just for them. And Sam had prepared it to make it even more special.
When Kurt entered the room, he was met with floating candles above him. Soft music was playing and the room was decorated with pictures of the two of them. Some were moving while others weren’t, having been taken with cameras owned by Sam’s parents.
Smiling, Kurt looked around, a confused look settling on his features right as Sam took off the cloak.
“Oh!” Kurt exclaimed softly, surprised to realize Sam was right there. “I was wondering where you were.”
“Right behind you the whole time. I wanted to see the look on your face when you read the notes.” Sam smiled as he walked closer to Kurt.
Kurt smiled, that bashful smile that Sam loved. There were many smiles, beautiful ones Kurt had, and he never failed to fall in love with any of them.
“What is this about, Sam?” Kurt asked, tilting his head as he looked up into Sam’s eyes.
Sam took a deep breath. This was his moment. The moment he had been trying to prepare for, to muster up enough courage to act on, and now it was here.
“I like you, Kurt. I really, really like you.” Sam said softly, almost rushing to get the words out before he froze up again. “I hope this doesn’t ruin our friendship because you mean more to me than anyone else, in both the Wizard world and the Muggle world. And I really would like to take you to the Christmas dance, but not just that, I want to take you for dates, walk around the grounds at Hogwarts with you, and look at the stars, I…” Sam paused, realizing he was rambling and not giving Kurt a chance to speak.
Kurt didn’t say anything for a moment and Sam thought he did something wrong. But that thought disappeared the moment Kurt pressed his lips to Sam’s. Moaning softly, Sam gently cupped Kurt’s cheek. Feeling Kurt’s smooth lips on his was like Christmas morning, ironic considering Christmas was two weeks away, but it felt so amazing. So right and Sam could feel his heart burst. Everything he had ever wanted was right here in his grasp.
The kiss lasted for only a moment but when Kurt pulled away, Sam smiled.
“I take it you’ll be my date?”
Kurt laughed softly, pecking Sam’s lips once. “For as long as you’ll have me.”
Sam grinned and linked his hand with Kurt’s, squeezing gently as he kissed Kurt once more. “So you liked my scavenger hunt?”
“I just can’t believe those girls managed to keep their mouths closed.”
“Those girls? I can’t believe Rachel kept her mouth closed!” Sam laughed and Kurt just rolled his eyes before kissing Sam gently.
“Merry Early Christmas, Sam.”
“Merry Early Christmas, Kurt.”
In that moment Sam realized that he had the best gift in the world. It had taken him a while to be ready for it but now that it was here, that Kurt was here, he’d never let him go.
