That's a first.
What are some of your personal favorite spell anchors/physical things you attach workings to, if you have any?
Predictably, Magic: The Gathering cards. I love these things so much, they're so versatile. Pretty much any magical effect can be applied to a matching card. I use them most for my Wall Wards or my thoughtforms/servitors.
You can get Commons and Uncommons for dirt cheap through places like TCGPlayer, Cardmarket, or a game store. Usually, game stores will get rid of Commons and Uncommons in bulk for cheap if you're looking for a deal. The downside is that you have to have incredible luck or a fairly large city to have a game store available to you.

/\This Zolotov person designs some really neat software, most of it free or cheap. at it for decades. SunVox is far and away the most full-featured and least frustrating DAW I've ever used and cost >$10 for my phone, so get that down. Also I'm not a developer and haven't thoroughly read the license for it, but...it looks like SunVox also has a free library version that will run inside other code to make adaptive soundtracks?
Then he also makes VJ software, and a bunch of weird standalone synth apps mostly doing image-sound conversion and other databendy jank.
My point being I thought I'd just leave this here cause when I find good creative tools I like to share.

Get Tools Cheap
The first thing to do is make a list of the equipment and/or tools that you want to buy. The list should be organized with space on the right to expand the item.
Now do some research. Find out the regular price of the items so you have an idea how much this equipment really costs. This gives you a benchmark.
Now that you have your list together, find out where all your local rental centers and pawn shops are. Print off a map at Google maps for each one and visit the store. DO NOT CALL. THESE PLACES NEGOTIATE FOR CASH FACE-TO-FACE.
Once you find an item you want at the rental shop, ask when they are swapping out for the new models. If they have some currently being swapped, ask how much they want for the item. Because the product is used, you will get a great deal on it. Plug it in. Test it. Ask if there have been any repairs to it. If it is larger machinery, there will be a maintenance and repair log. Ask to see the log. If there have been a lot of repairs on the same part over and over again, you may not want to buy that piece of equipment. Most rental shops swap out their equipment every 1-2 years regardless of condition so there are deals to be had.
If you are negotiating at a pawn shop, ask how much the item is. Whatever the price of the item. Start at 20% less than the item. If they get upset, simply say that is what you wanted to spend and you have to be close to that. Usually you end up 10% under the listed price which is still a great deal considering the item new would be 50% more.
If you simply can't find the equipment or tools you are looking for at a decent price, then you can look for business auctions. The equipment will be sold at what ever the auction price is. You can go as high as you want. These auctions are always listed in the paper starting about a month before the auction starts.
