Bus from Chefchaoen to Fez

It was another day of traveling for me. This time I have learned not to get too greedy with my traveling that I would end up scheduling one thing after another and end up missing a lot of stuff if my schedule doesn't go as planned. I have allocated this whole day for traveling from Chefchaoen to Fez. Looking at the map, you would think that it would be short ride but this won't be the case. Some parts of these would be mountain roads so you can't really drive fast. The bus seems to be large and comfortable enough for what I expect to be a four hour drive.

Chefchaoen Bus Station

The rain was continuing all throughout the night so I had no illusions on what kind of weather it would be the following day. It didn't really matter anymore since I would be leaving Chefchaoen that morning. It is a pity that I didn't get the nice weather I was hoping for. But maybe that would be a reason for me to come back here. I checked out of the Hotel Al Kalaa and made my way down the bus station. This trek was much easier than the one going up the mountain. It was fortunate that the weather wasn't as bad anymore.

Restaurant Paloma

I eventually gave in to the heavy rain that has been falling the entire morning. I thought that if I had lunch then maybe the rain would go away. It wasn't meant to be. I ended up heading back to the Hotel Al Kalaa to dry myself up. My shoes and my jacket were soaked. I guess there is no helping it since this is the weather here. It was chilly up in these mountains so I was just so glad to be back in the hotel and turned up the heating. I spent the rest of the day in the hotel just catching up on stuff. As the sun was going down, I started to head out for dinner. I was asking for recommendations on where I should be eating. The owner recommended that I go to Restaurant Paloma which is owned by his friend.

La Lampe Magique

I was finally out in the rain again. I spent an hour or less exploring the kasbah of Chefchaoen. The kasbah is quite impressive but there was little literature on what I was seeing. To think that they can charge sixty Moroccan dirhams for this can be quite outrageous. Locals would pay much less than that so only foreigners get stiffed. In the end, I could only use my imagination on what this place could have been. Apart from the prison at the ground floor, there was little to indicate what the other floors were.

Museum at the Kasbah in Chefchaoen

The tower at the kasbah in Chefchaoen wasn't the only interesting structure here in the park. It was the most convenient for me since it was nearer. At the far end of the kasbah, there is another structure which now serves as a museum. The museum is a simple one which depicts how traditional Islamic art is made. There is a video on display here which talks about this but it was in French and I couldn't understand it. The inside of the museum eventually opens up in the central area where there is a fountain like structure. There was no water here but you can surely imagine there to have been one.

View from the Top of the Kasbah in Chefchaoen

I was deliberately being slow when exploring the inside of the kasbah tower. This was because it was raining outside and I didn't want to go back out here. I took this opportunity to wipe the camera lens dry, at least I would be dry for a while. There were some exhibits here and they shed some light into the history of the kasbah. The second level of the tower of the kasbah is pretty much level with the roofs of the nearby houses. This means the view wasn't very nice. There is a nother floor and it can be accessed by stairs.

Climbing the Kasbah at Chefchaoen

I finally went in the main tower of the kasbah in Chefchaoen. This is a 15th to 16th century fortress which was meant to fend of invasions by the Portuguese and Spanish. It thought it was a bit odd to just protect the kasbah area when you should be protecting the entire city. If the defenders end up surrounded there is nowhere they could run to. The kasbah has multiple functions. The ground floor was apparently a prison. There wasn't much literature here at the site and I just assumed this from what I was seeing. The upper levels of the tower were more pleasant.

Inside the Citadel at Chefchaoen

The kasbah at Chefchaoen is probably the most recognizable structure in the entire city. It is a fortress that was built in the sixteenth century to fend off invasions by the Portuguese and the Spanish. While the fortress itself wasn't very large it was still quite imposing with its high walls. The most prominent feature of the kasbah is the lookout tower. The visit to the tower couldn't come any sooner since I was already soaked from the rain. It took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust to the darkness.
