This goes out to @noona-clock Admin T in honor of her birthday today! She inspired me to start writing again, so my first piece goes out to her! Thanks for always being a kind person to talk to and for loving this man as much (if not more although I will fight you for him) as I do 😊

[Introduction]
Four years. You had been a debuted singer for four years now. You could barely remember the years of late practice nights, long street audition lines, and sore throats when you wouldn’t stop rehearsing. Being alone and trying to get your foot in the door in the music industry had meant sacrifices.
The family supporting you from overseas never had to know that in the winter you had slept in every pair of sweats that you owned because it was either pay for your vocal lessons or pay for heating. Or that the days of you buying sweets and treats when you felt like it were over and that you were willing to go to a grocery store across town if it meant getting eggs slightly cheaper.
In the end, it had actually been the eggs that did it.
From someone videoing you singing while getting eggs, companies had started to reach out to you. You’d signed with a small one and had been able to debut with your own EP almost a year after. After winning Best New Artist you began to gain more respect and fans and were given more freedom by your company to write and produce your own songs.
But always solo.
It’s not that you didn’t like other artists, but you were known for your vocal range and unique, deeper voice – not something easily paired with another singer. You enjoyed singing for drama soundtracks the best anyway, and singing solo allowed you to work on slower songs for shows without having to worry about producing the next summer hit that would catch in everyone’s ear. Plus, you just worked better alone. That’s they way it always had been and you were comfortable that way.
Your company approached you about a new drama coming out named ‘Descendants of the Sun’ and when you heard the storyline and saw the leads, you knew you wanted to work on the project. But they told you there was a catch.
“Y/N. A lot of artists are wanting to work on this project. Gummy has already signed on and there’s talk of Davichi writing a song too” explained your manager, Jieun. You hadn’t even had a chance to sit down in your studio before she’d brought up your next big project.
“Well that’s great! The more the merrier!”
“That’s just it. They already have their artists picked for the ballads and more emotional songs. They want to see if you can do something new.”
“What do you mean?” you said, starting to get anxious.
“Well, just hear me out for a second.”
Oh no. This can’t be good you thought, mentally bracing yourself and slightly wishing you were sitting down.
“Y/N, they want to see if you’ll do something more upbeat and warm.”
“Okay. That’s not what I’m used to for my soundtrack pieces but that isn’t a deal breaker. Why do I get the feeling that’s not all?”
“Well they want you to do a warm and romantic song…with someone.”
“… Someone? Like someone accompanying me? Great! Where do I sign?” you said, hoping that was the end of it and not wanting to hear what you knew was coming.
“Not an accompanist, y/n. Someone as in…”
“Please don’t say it…”
“…a duet” she spit out.
“Jieun-ssi! It’s not that I’m against working with someone, but you know that my voice doesn’t blend easily, especially with other female voices. This is a bad idea because the song wouldn’t come out right. The director can’t possibly want that” you pleaded, grabbing your water and taking a drink to calm yourself down.
“Well, he doesn’t actually. Not with another female. He actually already picked who he wants you to partner up with.”
“’Not with another female’? But I’ve never collaborated with another male singer. Does he want a female singer/male rapper duet? I mean I guess that wouldn’t be too bad…” you started to think.
“Y/N. It’s not a rapper” Jieun interrupted.
You paused. There’s no way I can duet with another male singer. “Our voices just won’t mix” you said quietly.
“First off, you didn’t say that in your head, just to let you know. Secondly, I actually think this could be a good pairing! Not only is he a strong vocalist, but he’s got a voice unique enough that I think it might just work! Plus, he’s big in the industry so it would be good publicity to pair you two up for the song.”
“Okay okay! Enough of the build-up because you’re making me anxious. Just tell me who it is already.”
“Promise me that you’ll at least meet with him to see if your voices mix. He’s being told about you too, so think of it as professional courtesy to not reject the pairing outright. I know you want to write for this movie, so you owe it to yourself to at least hear your vocals together.”
“Jieun! I can’t take this anymore! Who is it?”
“…EXO’s Chen.”

By the time you got home and in bed that night, you couldn’t sleep. You kept running through the day in your head and wondering if it had really happened. Did Jongdae really almost kiss you? Was he flirting with you? Did he like you??
You grabbed your little velvet pillow and turned your face into it so you could squeal with some decency. What is happening to me right now?! Your heart was racing, a smile refused to leave your face, and you were restless.
As you were tossing around trying to calm yourself down, you heard your phone go off with a text from JIeun.
“Y/N. Don’t forget I’ll be by early tomorrow to pick you up to take you to the practice studio. We need to really focus on your concert now that you guys have the bulk of the song work done.”
Coming back to reality, you sent her a reply saying okay as you realized you didn’t have time to think of him right now. You started to think through your upcoming schedule to dull your mind to sleep, and it worked for the most part. But right before your mind switched off, you remembered seeing a pair of eyes a smile, bringing a similar smile to your own lips as you fell asleep.
You were out of bed and in leggings and a loose top with your hair up for practice in just enough time when Jieun rolled up in front of your place. You couldn’t remember what you’d been dreaming about, only that you hadn’t wanted to wake up so you’d given yourself some extra time. Since it was just a practice day, it’s not like you had to be dressed up nicely.
In the car, you put in your headphones and listened to music to wake you up. Jieun handed you some tea to warm up your throat and you just watched the sun rise as you headed to your company.
When you arrived, you saw crowds of fans in front, much bigger than normal. Taking a look, you saw pictures of Jongdae and knew it had to do with the collab news being leaked. Grabbing just a hat and mask, this was your territory after all, you didn’t have to hide, you waited as Jieun came around with some guards to get you.
Stepping out of the car, you kept your eyes ahead while listening to the crowd as you headed inside. Most seemed to be asking about the collab, but you could still distinguish the cheers of your fans which put a little smile on your face. When you reached your company doors, you turned around to wave at them, lowering your mask so your fans could see you smile. When you did, the cheers got even louder.
Knowing they were still supporting you, you yelled out that you had to go practice for your concert, encouraging another round of cheers, and you headed inside the building. At the elevators, you and Jieun shared a smile knowing that the leak yesterday hadn’t messed with anything for now.
You immediately got to work in the practice room with your backup dancers. Since you weren’t coming out with anything new, they were all dances you knew but just needed to cement. You worked for hours, doing some parts over and over to get them exactly right. By the time lunch was rolling around, you were ready to push through and work but you noticed your dancers seemed a little tired.
“Hey Jieun, can we order some lunch for them?” “Sure thing! What do you want?” “I’ll probably just grab some fruit and practice some more on my own for the solo parts, stop me for dinner though.”
After seeing her nod, you told all the dancers they could break for the day after they’d eaten all their lunch. After thanking them for all their work, you headed to a smaller practice room to work by yourself. You left some of the lights off, leaving the room dim as you moved slowly to the familiar rhythms of your own songs.
Your breath was heaving after hours of working when you heard a knock on your practice room. Instead of stopping though, you kept dancing through this complicated step sequence. You heard the door open but concentrated on only yourself in the mirror as you hit every mark. You ended the song crouched down on the floor with your head down.
Without looking up, you spoke to who you assumed was Jieun. “Hey. I know I told you to stop me around dinner but I want to work through one more piece before breaking. If you could just grab me something simple and drop it at the door I promise I’ll actually eat it this time and not forget.”
“Well,” started a deep voice, “if you tell me what you want I can go get it, but I get the feeling I’m going to need to make sure you stop to eat.” Whipping your head around, it took you a second to realize that Jongdae was inside your practice room.
“S..Sunbae? What are you doing here?” Standing up and running a hand through your hair that had long left the pony-tail to try and pat pieces into place. You were sweating and had no makeup on and Jongdae was just smiling at you as if this was normal.
He pushed himself off of the door and walked over to you. “I got in touch with your manager because I wanted to figure out when we could meet to work again and she said you’d be busy practicing so I wanted to send you food.”
“That is so sweet. But you didn’t have to come yourself, what about all the fans out front? Did they see you?”
“I mean not clearly but I’m sure they guessed. Plus, the news of our collab is already out, so what’s the harm in seeing each other?” “Well I guess there’s none, but..” “No buts. Now are you going to tell me what you’d like to eat or will I have to drag you out of here to pick something yourself?” he said, smirking at you.
Hmm. Dinner with Jongdae? That’s easy. “Drag me out,” you quipped back with a smile. “Now that I think about it, I could use a break.”
You saw his look of surprise when you took him up on his offer. “There’s a pretty good food stand a few blocks away and I know the owner. She’s nice and won’t fuss over some big shot from EXO coming to eat,” you said, teasing him. He laughed, bent down to grab your hoody and held it open without another word.
You knew the drill at this point, so you walked up to him and turned, spreading your arms so he could put your jacket on. “Could you grab my hat too?” you said as you zipped up your hood.
When you turned he had your hat ready and he secured it on your head, pulling it a little too low and making you both laugh. When he righted it though, he tucked some of your hair behind your ear, leaving his warm palm lingering against your cheek. “Ready?” “Mhmm.”
You really should have thought this through more. “Please please stop telling him about that.” “Oh come now. Everybody’s face gets like that when they eat something too spicy.” “Right, Y/N. Let the pretty lady finish her story,” Jongdae said, clearly laughing at you. “Oh now aren’t you sweet! But as I was saying…”
Currently you were trapped. Jongdae wouldn’t stop ordering food and Ms. Kim, the owner, wouldn’t stop telling him stories about you. You’d been eating at her stand at all hours of the night since you were a trainee, so you knew how talkative you could be. You just hadn’t realized how many things about you she knew. By this point, your cheeks were permanently red from embarrassment but you also couldn’t keep the smile off of your face every time you heard Jongdae’s belly laugh. Just as he was starting to finish his third serving, his phone went off.
“Hello?...I’m out right now…Ah WAEEEEE..” he whined, startling you. He got up to finish the call in private so you turned back to Ms. Kim who was giving you a funny look. You tried to find something on the table to distract you, but you could feel her eyes on the back of your head. “You brought a friend,” she said as a matter of fact. “And not just any friend, a friend who is a male.”
Trying to avoid her eyes, you accidentally caught Jongdae’s as he was finishing up his call, making both of you smile. Catching yourself though, you turned back to Ms. Kim with a blank look on your face. “I don’t know what you are talking about. I’ve brought friends here before.”
“Jieun doesn’t count, honey.” You didn’t really have a response to that. “I’m not trying to meddle, I’m just making two observations. You’ve never brought anyone with you before and I’ve never seen you smile the way you just smiled at him.”
“Really?” you heard a voice say.
“Sunbae!” you said, turning around in your seat after seeing a satisfied smile on Ms. Kim’s face as she busied herself. You couldn’t even look him in the eyes and hoped that he would just leave it.
Maybe wishes did come true. “That was my manager. Seems my schedule for tomorrow got moved up so I need to head out. He’s going to get in me from your company? Want to head back?” he said, tossing money on the table before you could figure out what was going on. You just nodded and got up, saying bye to Ms. Kim and walking back towards the company.
It was quiet as you two walked back through the side streets. All you could hear was his breathing and you couldn’t look at him because you were still too embarrassed about him hearing what Ms. Kim said.
When you were about a block away, he stopped though. “Y/N.” You stopped too but didn’t turn to look at him. “Hmm?” “Y/N, can you turn around for a second and look at me?”
Not wanting to but also wanting to do as he said, you slowly turned and made a point of only looking as high as his throat when you lifted your head. Which wasn’t smart either because you could see his adams apple bob as he swallowed as if he was nervous. You were too busy watching it actually to notice that he was raising his hand.
Gently, he lifted your chin so that your eyes were on his. “Y/N, why did you take me there to eat?” “Because we were hungry and it was close?” “But we could’ve gone to the cafeteria just as easily.” “I mean I like Ms. Kim and it’s my favorite spot. Don’t take what she said too seriously, it’s not that I don’t have friends, I just don’t take them there.” you said before realizing you were cornering yourself.
The thumb of his hand brushed your cheek, making you realize he hadn’t moved it. Your breath hitched at the feeling. “Thank you for trusting me enough to take me there.”
“I do. Trust you I mean. I’m not sure why, but I just feel like you’re… safe for me.” you whispered out, gently placing a hand on his other arm.
You could feel his hand flex as he gently pulled your head closer. His warm breath brushed your lips as you closed your eyes. His lips touched yours softly, as if asking if you were okay. You responded by gently kissing him back and tightening the hand on his arm to pull him closer. As your lips started moving together, he moved his hand from your cheek to your hair, combing through it to cup the nape of your neck. His warm yet rough hand. His soft and sure lips. His forearm flexing with restraint as he tried to keep the pace slow. You wanted to remember it all.
Eventually, he pulled back slowly. You were too stunned to open your eyes until he laid a kiss on your forehead and took a step back.
Neither of you said anything after that, he just grabbed your hand and continued walking as if it was the most natural thing for him to do. And it was. Natural. You didn’t feel embarrassed or shy. You just felt relaxed with him as you two walked to the last couple of blocks to the company. When you arrived at the back entrance, you tried to pull your hand out of his. “Y/Nnn…Waeeeee…”
Laughing at his puppy whine you found so adorable, you just pulled again. “Sunbae, isn’t it better to keep this to ourselves for now. We just had our collab news leaked. And you and I both know this would be much bigger than that, if this is what you wanted of course.”
“Y/N. You are what I want. Well, and two other things.” he smirked, tapping you on your nose after you scrunched it in confusion. “What would those be?”
“First, your number. We aren’t actually scheduled to work together again for a couple of weeks, and I don’t think I can go that long without talking to you or seeing you,” he said, making you blush. “Heck. I couldn’t even go a day before I came up with a reason.” You handed him your phone and asked “What about the other thing?” as you saw his manager pulling up.
Jongdae quickly typed in his information and texted himself. After hearing his own phone go off, he handed yours back and leaned to say something in your ear before getting in his van.
“For you to call me Jongdae.” he said, softly touching his lips to your cheek before pulling away. And just like that he made your heart stop and your face split into a grin as you watched him drive away.
@noona-clock and @daelicious-jongbulge here’s the next part! Hope you enjoy and anyone else let me know if you want tagged in the next part!
