a couple of years ago when i was living in shanghai i bought a revenge of the sith dvd off the street. it came with hilariously mangled subtitles that ranged from somewhat close to what the actors were saying to far, far away….
《Chenglish 港式英語》
點解Chi Bear 係 Chi Bear? 從前有隻樹熊,佢係香港出世,學左tree gun級既英文。佢覺得自己應該改返個英文名,於是叫自己做Chi Bear. (其實佢係咪想講Tree Bear! ?)
where is the tire??
this is in Ivys apartment building. lmao they're everywhere. I think they're new because I never noticed them before? i dont know. but you would think they would know the difference between fire and tire?
I've seen a lot of funny chinese translation fail collections, but this one is by far the funniest!
A nod to My Drunk Kitchen
More bad Chinese signs, folks! These never get old.
Giggles and wisdom
We were learning the verb 'to squeeze' in class, 挤 our teacher gave us an interesting saying, 时间是海绵里的水,一挤水就有。Time is like a sponge, you only need to squeeze is it and you'll have more.
How could the phrase 不比* leave us in giggles? Because it sounds like 'boobies', the pin yin is bu bi. Wow did I really just turn 19, or 9?
Apparently the phrase '玩儿得很high', means this is fun, this fun is great. (literally fun very high) So fun that it makes you as high as a joint? Ehhehe
*A 不比B + adj Used to express disagreement with the speaker on their comparison.
Chenglish
The building I work in at my school is meant for all english-related classes. To encourage this learning there are motivational posters all over the walls that are written in english... bad english. Here are some examples:
"Time the study pain is temporary, has not learned the pain is life-long."
"Nobody can casually succeed, it comes from the thoroughself-control and the will."
"Smart is the genius of accumulation of hard work."
"Reading is not a natural complement lack of experience and make reading inadequate."
"Keep nails clean and all hygiene, freely throwing-up is prohibited." - I believe this one is referring to spitting on the floor.
"Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?"
This last one is not all that funny; I just like it.
"Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?"
