Cheow Lan Wildlife
Okay, so we didn't JUST kayak during our stay at the lake. That would have been kind of excessive, even for us.
Bee also took us on a couple of safaris by longboat, in which we tried to spot animals as they emerged from the jungle for water.
Wild elephants do live in Khao Sok, and Bee received a tipoff that a family was sighted near some of the bungalows. Unfortunately, we didn't see them - only their footprints. But I thought it was pretty magical to know that elephants had been there, just freely roaming.
We saw several wild bison on the evening safari. No good photos of them because it was kind of dark and they were far away. But they had white ankles, which made it look like they were wearing socks, and we're pretty sure that's why the area is called Khao Sok.
We also went on a hike that led to an absolutely stunning viewpoint.
On the way back, we encountered a tortoise! Bee said that the tortoises are rare to see. Even rarer than the bison.
We came across a cave on one of the kayak excursions. That was trippy. I'm putting the cave in the safari post because of the bats.
And that's it for our Khao Sok visit. What an incredible place. I love this candid shot James took of our group, just vibing on the boat.
Cheow Lan Lake
Well guys, I think I can go home now.
After travelling for 4 of the last 12 months, and visiting at least 14 national parks, I have found a contender for the most beautiful place.
It is this lake.
Cheow Lan Lake is a 180 square kilometer lake within Khao Sok National Park. The spot where we were is about an hour away from the pier by longboat.
We’ve spent the last several days in this remote area – it turns out there are places in Thailand with no wifi! – so I’m a bit behind on my blogging. I’ll fill you in on all the details soon. For now, here are some more photos of the lake.
I hope DiCaprio doesn’t make a film about it.
