Ah yes, I remember being surprised at the show Sex Education, because I used to root for Otis and Maeve, but the ship Otis x Ruby was a pleasant surprise. Honestly, I knew it wasn't going to last, but they were really cute together. They both had a good development, with Otis being more confident and Ruby showing a softer side. So that was nice while it lasted...

Ruby and Otis fit a trope I’ve always loved: the popular girl dating the nerd without losing her essence as a sassy, queen-bee, slightly bitchy character, but still allowing herself to be human. It’s a teenage trope I’ve always enjoyed, unlike the popular guy / awkward or nerd girl trope, which I absolutely hate with all my heart.

Besides that, two more things come into play: the “opposites attract” concept, which I also really like, and the “weird as fuck but with great chemistry” dynamic because they’re both total weirdos in their own ways, but the fact that they’re weird in such different ways makes the whole thing work. The problem is that Otis is clearly obsessed with his relationship with Maeve, which he’s never really gotten over, and on top of that, in the last season he turns into a terrible character. But if the writers had actually committed to Ruby and Otis, they could’ve created something much more interesting than the whole Otis/Maeve thing.

It’s something I also love about Isaac and Aimee: that “opposites attract but they’re both absolute weirdos” vibe, because each of them is weird af in their own particular way, yet their quirks complement each other perfectly. It makes the relationship not only logical but also genuinely fun, entertaining, and adorable. That’s something I really like in a ship. Also, to be fair, Aimee Lou Wood has enough charisma to reach the other end of the galaxy and can make any scene interesting, plus she’s got chemistry with literally everyone, hahaha.
