alright. this will be mainly an Hermes work bc i just said that i dont know how to write for Charon.
Hermes x Charon and Kid of Hermes! reader: Papá!
Hermes had quite a few children, some were lucky enough to be gods, others demigods, and others, unfortunately, had to face something that he would wish no child of his to have to face, death, the river Styx, and to a lesser extent, Charon.
The man from the river diligently did his job, absolutely all the time, but Hermes could always feel that (somehow) empathetic look, every time one of Hermes' children ended up in his ranks. Many did not understand the man from the boat because of his peculiar way of communicating, but Hermes understood him very well every time he articulated something regarding his children.
-"don't worry, I'll take care of them"-
Which made at least the emptiness easier to bear, knowing that someone loved and trusted like Charon could at least watch over his children in ways that Hermes could not, protect them as he could not.
However, a while ago, this took a rather unusual turn.
Hermes had recently found another baby that he had had, to spare the details, and that its mother had unfortunately not made it through the birth. So there he was, carrying the mother of his daughter with Charon, while carrying a tiny bundle in his clothes the entire way.
Even when they were alone, Charon noticed this, and pointed at said bundle with his oar, gesturing confusedly.
When Hermes decided to remove the blanket that covered the newborn baby, he could swear that Charon's mouth grew larger, the son of Nyx didn't know what to say. This may have been the first time he had seen a living baby in a long time. And to top it off, she looked just like Hermes. With his little wings coming out of her sides, as she curled around the blanket, staying close to her father.
The man in the boat looked at Hermes to know what to do next, but the messenger god's expression was… strange. He looked conflicted, nostalgic, and sad, as if he was trying to do what he always does, leave his children behind because “it was better this way” but for whom, at this point? Did he really want to see this child again only when he had to give her to Charon?
Obviously he wasn’t the best father, but maybe, maybe he could improve, he wasn’t the same god he was when he was young, he was much more mature now, he understood the consequences now, maybe he could have a relationship with his daughter, maybe he could make sure she had a long life as she should. But…
Charon seemed to notice his partner’s internal conflict, so, even with all the doubts he had, he stepped forward, gesturing to grab the baby in Hermes’ arms. Who, confused by the sudden change of atmosphere, did so.
A part of Charon was curious about this little creature, who seemed to get into Hermes’ head so easily, he hadn’t seen anything like this since Prince Zagreus with his mother, could it be something all babies have? What’s so special about this? A part of him expected the little girl to start crying at any moment due to her terrifying appearance, however, he ended up getting a… surprise.
When he least expected it, the baby grabbed the tip of his hat, throwing it at him while happily chewing on the tip, laughing at Charon’s complex reaction. Even when he tried to take back what was his, the baby wouldn’t let go of the hat, looking funnier by the minute.
Hermes was holding back the urge to laugh out loud and instinctively say “that’s my baby!”, she wasn’t even a month old and she was already trying to steal someone away (like her father would have done at her age), a part of him felt so proud. On the other hand, he was worried that Charon might lose his patience, so he acted quickly and decided to take the baby's hat off and put her back in his arms.
That's when it happened, as Hermes picked her up and moved her out of Charon's reach, a clear babbling of the word "dada" could be heard.
Hermes was perplexed, Charon was perplexed, however, that… didn't feel bad, not at all. That was what Hermes thought, as the little creature began to fall asleep in his arms.
Yes. This wasn't bad at all.
