February 20th is Cherry Pie Day. This tasty holiday was created as part of a week long celebration of the cherry.
National Cherry Week appears to have been established around 1918 as a promotional event created by an advertising committee consisting of a coalition of fruit growers and packers, who chose the date to capitalize on George Washington’s birthday and the apocryphal cherry tree legend associated with the man. The members of the advertising committee were appointed each year at the National Canners Association’s annual convention.
