“Drive Mile-A-Minute To Catch Boy of 12,” Toronto Star. February 2, 1932. Page 18. ---- Ex-Constable and Man Juveniles Ran Down Chase Alleged Car Thieves ---- A stolen car, driven by a boy of twelve years, led Everett Tripp, Kennedy Rd., former Toronto policeman, a mile-a-minute chase through Scarboro back roads last night, after escaping rom Jon Trumbill, Kalso Ave., Scarboro. The lad fled in the car after crushing Trumbull’s leg against a telegraph pole. Forced off the road by Tripp’s car, the boy and a 14-year-old companion, abandoned the machine and made off across the fields.
The lads were arrested later on Warden Ave., by Det.-Sergt. Frank Crowe, Detectives Lister Sullivan and Bud Taylor, and a number of Toronto police who were rushed to the scene in the belief the boys committed a hold-up at Sadler’s Drug Store, Woodbine and Sammon Aves., shortly before. Police from East York, Scarboro, and Toronto conducted a miniature man-hunt in the neighborhood before the lads were picked up.
Stealing a car belonging to Chas. Montgomery, 82 Triller Ave., on Gerrard St., according to police, the boys drove up a lane and tore off the 1932 license plates, substituting 1931 plates they had found. They later lost their way on Kingston Rd. and pulled up at Stpp 14 to ask Trumbull the way to Toronto. Suspicious of the boys’ behavior, Trumbull asked for their permit. The boys started to drive away, but Trumbull jumped on the running board and tried to force the car to the side of the road.
The 12-year-old driver, however, forced the wheel from his grip, and drove against a post, severely crushing Trumbull’s leg. He ran into a nearby drug store and called to Tripp. Both climbed into Tripp’s car and gave chase. Tripp told police he had to drive over 60 miles an hour to overtake their car. When the pursuers drew abreast, the youthful driver turned off the road and both occupants jumped from the car, climbed a fence, and disappeared.
Brought to Scarboro station later, the lads at first maintained their innocence. After questioning, however, both are said to have admitted stealing the car.

What to do about our children becoming young drivers.
