I don’t normally watch a lot of television. There isn’t anything on and I don’t have the patience to wait for the shows that I might be interested in to air. I have Netflix, but even that doesn’t have a lot of options for me lately. The few select shows that I was excited for have been canceled, including the recently cancelled Nickelodeon show, Sam and Cat.
While the show was successful due to its moderate amount of silliness, the show’s cancellation was eminent when sparks flew between the two stars of the show, Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy. Most teenagers recognize Ariana Grande as the new R&B artist of the year, but whatever happened with Jennette McCurdy? Though McCurdy has been working with Dan Schneider, the producer of the show, at least four years longer than Grande has, during the releases of the last few episodes of Sam and Cat, Grande and McCurdy fought over whom had the most money and McCurdy had issues with racy images of herself over the internet. The feud and the disrespect for McCurdy resulted in the show’s cancellation.
I admit that I’m a bit old to watch Nickelodeon, but I grew up with Dan Schneider. He produced a good number of successful children shows for Nickelodeon such as Keenan and Kel (1996-2000), The Amanda Show (1999-2002), Drake and Josh (2004-2007), iCarly (2007-2012) and Victorious (2010-2013), in addition to Sam and Cat. He is currently producing a new show called Henry Danger, which as far as I know contains no recurring stars from the previous shows that he’s created, something that he hasn’t done since Keenan and Kel nearly twenty years ago. This means that a whole new generation of children will be watching Schneider’s new shows.
It is sad and unfortunate that a beloved show with talented stars could end so quickly, but it’s time to move on, especially for people like me. The way that Sam and Cat blew up just reminded me how life truly is. It’s not always a series of silly and whimsical events, though I wish it could be. It is unfair and intense and sometimes you just have to roll with the punches in order to survive. Yet, the most important thing to remember from this is that you can’t watch children shows forever. We need to get our heads out of the past and keep moving forward.
