War Horse - Michael Morpurgo
Now this, was an impulse buy during Cyber Monday on Bookdepository. It cost me 40 NOK (about 4 USD), which is immensely cheap here. (In a Norwegian store the lowest price would be 100 NOK.) Anyways, I read the description and was drooling. I have started reading it now, and I already love it to pieces.
Wikipedia: War Horse is a children's novel by English author Michael Morpurgo. It was first published in Great Britain by Kaye & Wardin 1982. The story recounts the experiences of Joey, a horse purchased by the Army for service in World War I France and the attempts of young Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home. It formed the basis of both an award winning play(2007) and an acclaimed film adaptation (2011) by Steven Spielberg.
It is written from the horse’s perspective, which totally blew my mind. It really takes the story to another level, and turns your perspective of a war like WW1 around as well. It is heartbreaking, beautiful and historic. I haven’t even finished the book yet, but I can safely say it is worth a read. Do not be turned off that it is a children’s novel either, because it holds themes like death, warfare, and of course family and friendship. (I firmly believe everyone should read children’s novels once in a while, so get on it.)
Also, as I study history, this was a very interesting novel, since it is set in the war to end all wars. “Mother says there's likely to be a war. [...] Something about some old duke that's been shot at somewhere.”
Here is another quote I quite like:
“Next to me, old Zoey leaned over her door to try to touch me, but our noses could not quite meet.”
