Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park) & Hannibal Lecter (Madds Mikkelsen) in Hannibal’s Takiawase (2X04, 2014).
The episode was so insane but also very well done. I have to give Tracy Spiridakos a round of applause for portraying that panic attack accurately and emotionally. Jesse Lee Soffer was a great and gracious scene partner for her in those difficult moments. I also appreciated how they integrated Hailey’s downward spiral with Jay’s uptick in figuring out what went wrong for her. As Jay got closer to the truth, Hailey got more raw, y’know? She kind of stripped away all the good things she knew would help her and went into survival mode when it comes to trauma. It’s sad to see but greatly executed by Tracy, and to have Jesse’s scene contrast that was a smart tv move.
The most chilling scene though in my opinion anyway, was when Voight came in at the tail end of Hailey’s panic attack.
You see it in the gif above, when she looks up and realizes Voight’s standing there. The fact that she pushed down all those intense feelings for his sake is downright awful.... she should not have had to make herself sick over this secret. It wasn’t her fault, she was manipulated by Hank from the start of the Roy situation.
Yes she chose to go there. But she only wanted to help. Voight pointed the gun on himself so Hailey would have to shoot Roy. He manipulated the situation— why they couldn’t say what happened and why he had to go burn the body after? I don’t exactly understand, but it’s how Voight does things, you know? Action first, ask questions later. It’s unfortunate but true. And honestly, I don’t blame Jay for punching him.
The only thing about the episode that was a little eerie to me was Upstead watching each other sleep. Like I understood the point behind it, but it was a tad awkward IMO. Idk just my two cents on the PD ep since I finally finished watching it.
PS: picking at skin can be an anxious tick, or can be used for fidgeting hands. Not a helpful coping tool, but it’s one that can show itself in times of stress in case anyone’s wondering how Hailey’s face got the way it was (bloody scratches). I studied psych in college, including behavioral mental health and have been educated on trauma responses too. Flashbacks are also common after a trauamatic event. As is irregular sleep patterns or insomnia. Unhealthy coping mechanisms are often used too (I.e: drinking to numb pain, withdrawing, too much anger, etc.) some of which Hailey exhibited. Healthy ones like she showed at the start of the episode (meditation, water, distractions) are more beneficial obvi.
