ChimaTEK BETA LAUNCH, Saya Woolfalk
Brooklyn Museum, NYC 2015
ChimaTek Cloud, by Saya Woolfalk, at the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City. At first when I entered, I felt a very ethereal feeling. Like I was entering the future, like something magickal was truly happening. After standing in the vortex and hearing the weird whispers, it slowly started to cause anxiety in my companion and myself. So this exhibit truly invoked a range of emotion and wonder.
The works in Disguise: Masks and Global African Art are organized around the idea that masquerade is always an art of becoming.
Through many projects, Saya Woolfalk has developed a multi-faceted world around a fictional race of part-plant, part-human women called the Empathics in order to explore hybridity and investigate the limits of human possibilities. This installation represents ChimaTEK, the Empathics’ for-profit corporation, named after the mythological Greek hybrid-animal, the Chimera. ChimaTEK offers customers the opportunity to try on new hybrid identities, to temporarily become another.

Every night at 11:57pm for the month of June, Times Square’s fantastic array of video screens will stop blasting advertisements for luxury watches and television shows to display a three-minute short film by multimedia artist Saya Woolfalk. The film, titled “Chimacloud,” is made up of short digital videos from Woolfalk’s ongoing project called ChimaTEK. A science fiction inspired project, ChimaTEK, is a macrocosmic project where Emphatics, are hybrids of people that are part plant and part human. They change colors and when they die, they become the landscape.... This installation is by Saya Woolfalk and the sound that gives life to this piece and is by Dim Gurevich.
