Lex pulled into the parking lot of a small hotel, killing the engine of his rundown car. he glanced at the rearview mirror, silently thanking whatever gods might exist that Hannah seemed to have fallen asleep. sighing under his breath, he leaned forward to rest his head on the top of the steering wheel, shutting his eyes as tight as he could to fight back the tears that threatened to form.

"this was a mistake," he whispered to himself, hands slipping from the steering wheel and landing in his lap. four hotels in one week, countless others since they'd been on the run, not trusting anyone enough to have more conversation than a passing 'hello, i need a room.' it had been so completely exhausting, and they were only halfway to their final destination. the indirect route they had opted for to hopefully shake off anyone following them had taken... longer than they'd hoped for.

the streetlamp he'd parked beside flickered twice, and a hand landed on his shoulder, causing him to jump and whirl around to face... Hannah. she'd woken up, a concerned look on her face as she rubbed her eyes.

"Lexi..? you alright?" she mumbled, words slurred from sleep. he smiled at her, trying to wipe the sadness from his eyes, and nodded. he was doing this for her. to keep her safe. as long as nothing could hurt her, he could do anything.

"yeah, m'alright, nana. let's get inside."

news of the outbreak hadn't reached the island in time -- hadn't reached anywhere in time, really, considering how fast the infection had spread across the country. by the time anyone in Hatchetfield had heard the news it was far too late to raise the bridge connecting them to the mainland. an infected had already found its way into their midst. humanity was done for, every last fucking person, except for the cockroaches of the world. the unlucky few that would manage to claw their way through the first few days and find a safe enough place to lock themselves until the initial carnage was over. gas stations, grocery stores, office buildings, basements, really anywhere that could be barricaded shut. unfortunately, after the first two or so weeks, those barricaded in homes started to run out of supplies, or were forced to leave the safety of their makeshift bases and relocate. not many of the townies had been stocking canned goods in preparation for the apocalypse, after all, who could have possibly predicted something like this would happen?
