hi Chiss friends: the naming conventions are still hella confusing to me.
If Che’ri was adopted by Thalias into the Mitth after her time as a skywalker was up…. Would “Theri” be an acceptable core name????

Chiss Names
After like 3 hours of research and name searching, and renaming the Kandorr legacy to Astor, I finally have my 4 Chiss siblings properly named
Chiss names have three parts - Your House/Roll name, your given name, and last is your surname. There is then a Core name that is made up of different parts of your name. One of the more famous Chiss is Thrawn, or Mitth’raw’nuruodo
Mitth is his house name (Ruling House), Raw is his given name, and Nuruodo is his family/surname. The core name is typically made up of the last sound or few letters of the family name, the given name, and then the first sound or few letters of the surname, thus "Thrawn"

Originally my characters were Mellsuine, Spiridon, Gintaras, and Mallorye, all of which were different spellings based on earth names. After research and name searching, they're now:
Ina’mel’astor (Core name Amelas) x Lord Scourge Jedi Knight
Ina’gintar’astor (Core name Agintaras) - Smuggler
Ina’spiro’astor (Core name Aspiroas) x Theron Shan - Jedi Consular
Ina’zill’astor (Core name Azillas) x Vector Hyllus - Imp Agent
Ina is their House name (a lesser House and not one of the Nine Ruling) and Astor is their sur/family name that they share with their Sith, half Sith, and Half chiss cousins.
Thrawn: "I am Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo, officer of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, servant of the Chiss Ascendancy."
Everyone else:
"What exactly do you want from me, Commander MITTHRAWNURUODO?"
"Or didn't you notice that Commander MITTH-WHATEVER was speaking Basic?"

I'm trying to understand Chiss naming rules and, uhh, my head is fuming (￣ヘ￣)
.. We know that Aristocra Saganu is serving House Miurani. So that would be part of his full name, wouldn't it? And as I understand it, it would be the first part (Miurani ' ? ' ?), but that doesn't work with Saganu since you always seem to take part of the house name into the core name..
Can you serve a family/house without getting adopted into it??

Chiss names really are the funniest ones to think of because literally nothing matters but the middle part.
Since I love to get (un-/)creative with them instead of looking up a name generator, here's how to do it:
1: Pick a nickname, my example being "Suri"
2: Put '...' as in S'ur'i for example
3: key smash at the front, you can do a little one or a big one, mine's a little one Fes'ur'i
4: Put the same number of letters at the back as you put in the front, you can also try to say the name and maybe get a feel for what letters would fit. Fes'ur'ika
That's it and if I'm not doing a rp-character, that's literally all the effort I put in.
Also, since a lot of people have no clue how chiss names "work", you can also put something edgy like "equal" and get a result that sounds less edgy "Ale'qua'lan" and they won't know.
Chiss naming conventions
For those curious about canon correct Chiss names here’s a little helpful guide of how they work
Most chiss names are made up of three parts usually separated by an apostrophe
Each part has a meaning
The first part identifies a persons family
the second the core name (or normal name)
The third is a little less clear but represents a social factor or status
Let’s take my trooper as an example her full name is Ash’shen’tor
The First parts Ash is her family name
The second Shen is her actual core name
The Third Tor refers to a very specific soldier status (i made this part of for flavour)
Most Chiss don’t go by their full name for brevity and efficiency though and take a name based around their core name
For example Thrawn takes his name from his core name raw and the three letters either side of the parts
Mitth'raw'nuruodo
Eli has been referred to as Ivan (maybe Ivant if i misheard) by chiss coming from the splitting Eli Vanto into Eli’van’to
But chiss don’t always follow this rule for their common names in Ash’s case she uses her family name (much like some people do in real life) but this is due to a lack of experience with her culture so the people around her just shortened the first part.
But her name is actually Shen
My other chiss Bolen’s name comes from the full family and core names of his full name Bo’len’trist
There’s a few exceptions however some Chiss have a two part name and lack a core name entirely. It seems to be a question of status but there are also many outliers to this rule
I don’t know if anyone will care about this but I thought it would be interesting to note the lore appropriate naming for lore enthusiasts like me hope this helps
Chiss Naming Conventions
So a long long time ago in a galaxy far away, there was this forum thread that went over detailed explanations of Chiss naming conventions.
From what I can tell? It has since been deleted, much to my dismay, and I’m sure to the dismay of others. At the very least, it’s gotten very hard to find. With that in mind, I tried to recreate the information here. Names are under the read more.
Disclaimer: This is no official thing, this is a fan thing, and tbh you don’t need to follow this if you don’t wanna. I figure you do you, hun.
Chiss Naming Conventions
The chiss name has three parts: House/Role, Core name, and Surname. The chiss name would therefore be spelled like Clan/Role’Given Name’Surname, separated by apostrophes and then mashed together.
Similarly, Mandalorians have three names: House, Clan, and Given. Sabine Wren from Star Wars Rebels at one point explains, “I’m Clan Wren, House Visla.” If this name were chiss, it’d be organized like so: Visla’Sabine’Wren
The House/Role name refers to your family’s ruling family. What happened is that Chiss society is organized into what your Role in society is. For example: Chiss from the Nuruodo family take up jobs in military and foreign policy. Chiss from the Sabosen family take up jobs in law and order, health, education. [x]
The Given name refers to the name your immediate family gave you. This name is usually one to two syllables, and can be anything your heart desires.
The Surname refers to your immediate family’s surname.
Overall, there are about 1-3 syllables per name. (e.g.; 3 syllables for the House name, three syllables for Given, three syllables for Surname) However, it seems very rare to find a name with more than 7 syllables total. Not sure why.
Core Names
Now the tricky part. Core names are shortened versions of the individual’s full Chiss name, usually used for informal situations and anyone who isn’t Chiss. (the Chiss language is apparently very difficult to pronounce) Core names are the last letter(s) of your House name, then your given name, then the first letter(s) of your surname.
Let’s use Thrawn as an example, this time. Mitth'raw'nuruodo is basically the most famous Chiss in the Star Wars series, and has reappeared as simply “Thrawn” in the new canon. (No news yet about Chiss naming conventions)
Mitth’raw’nuruodo is his full name, his Core name is found inside his full name. Mitth’raw’nuruodo: Thrawn takes the last two letters of his House name, his given name, then the first letter of his surname to come up with the core name “Thrawn.”
Another example: Chaf'orm'bintrano. His House name is Chaf, his given name is Orm, his surname is Bintrano. His Core name is Formbi. Chaf’orm’bintrano. I have a Chiss doctor OC with the core name Fauli, her full name is Chaf’aul’iflar. Another chiss OC is named Shah’owli’tarthi and he goes by the Core name Howlite. There’s a silent e at the end that he added to make the word flow more nicely.
Basically, take the middle of your Chiss name to create your Core name. You can totally play around with the lettering too.
What Now
Okay so now that you are thoroughly confused, here’s a list of previously canon names that you can use. Of course, you’re free to make up whatever name you please: This is just a suggestion guide!
