Glinda was sobbing into Elphaba’s hat and Chistery just awkwardly sliding up like “hey sorry miss. me and the boys saw you two being a little fruity on the balcony earlier.”
WICKED: FOR GOOD (2025) Dir. Jon M. Chu
the way chistery’s first words are “miss glinda” elphaba must’ve been saying that a lot for him to be able to say that
One thing I appreciate about Wicked: For Good is how important and savvy Chistery was.
In the No Place Like Home scene he kept the other monkeys from reacting.
When they were freed he was the one who confirmed it and then showed Elphaba where the other animals were imprisoned.
He led the monkeys when they teamed up with Fiyero in the woods.
He helped Fiyero rescue Elphaba from Munchkin land and Fiyero trusted him to get her to safety. I assume Chistery was the one that knew how to lead Elphaba to Kiamo Ko.
He delivered Fiyercrow's note to Elphaba and then he and Elphaba exchanged a look and a nod showing he was in on the plan.
He showed Glinda the bottle and gave her a look showing he knew who originally owned that bottle.
He helped Glinda secure power from Morrible.
Chistery has my vote for the new leader of Oz.
i love how fiyero was like to chistery "protect elphaba" and then chistery aided elphaba's kidnapping a child while elphaba was having a psychotic breakdown we love a feminist
Just two ozian nuclear families
Something I, at least, tend to forget about Elphaba and Fiyero choosing not to tell Glinda they're alive is that, at the time Fiyero's writing his note and when Elphaba reads it, neither of them have any idea that Glinda's about to go overthrow the Wizard. How could they?
We the audience know from the very start of Act 1 / movie 1, and see Glinda's takeover scenes before we get the reveal that Elphaba's alive, but in universe even Glinda doesn't know, at that point, that she'll see the green bottle and realise she has the leverage to do so.
As far as they know, she's going to be under Morrible and the Wizard's scrutiny and in a very dangerous position for an unknown amount of time - Elphaba was so worried that anyone find out she'd even been at Kiamo Ko. Glinda knowing they were alive meant the very real risk that she might slip up and spill the secret one day. Giving her the Grimmerie (that she'd need time to learn to read) wasn't going to help her against Morrible in the short term, and nothing could guarantee that even she would win a battle of popularity against the Wizard.
If we take the 1939 movie as canon wherever it doesn't clash with Wicked, then Fiyero would have seen the Wizard leaving and Glinda being made the new ruler before he went to meet Elphaba at Kiamo Ko, but it's also possible he left the Emerald City the second he was sure everyone bought the story of Elphaba's death - in the 2025 movie I don't think we see him in the crowd with Boq and Dorothy when the Wizard is leaving by balloon, and he probably avoided people along the way, so it's possible he got there without hearing word at all.
Personally I think he did know, but he and Elphaba decided not to tell her even then because they know Glinda would never stop looking for them, never stop trying to bring them back home somehow, that it would never work and would just put her in danger, and that it's kinder to let her grieve and move on.
(But you know who almost certainly does know? Chistery. He ferried the note from Fiyero, and he was very close by when Elphaba faked her death. Maybe he read the note and agreed with the plan (not like Elphaba had time to talk to him about it), maybe he'll keep silent forever, but maybe not. Other Monkeys might know too, and they're all learning to speak. Unless Elphaba had the chance to ask them to keep quiet while hiding under the floor, what reason do they have not to tell Glinda that she's mourning the living?)
