ACTION REPORT: 22 APRIL 1915  LANGEMARCK AND GRAVENSTAFEL RIDGE, YPRES SECTOR, WESTERN FRONT  50.89N 2.97E   YESTERDAY AT APPROX 1700 LOCAL TIME… THE GERMAN ARMY RELEASED WHAT IS SUSPECTED TO BE CHLORIN GAS OVER A SIX AND A HALF KILOMETRE SECTION OF FRONT… THE SECTION OF LINE WAS HELD BY FRENCH TERRITORIALS AS WELL AS MOROCCAN AND ALGERIAN TROOPS OF THE FRENCH 45TH AND 87TH DIVISIONS.  THE FRENCH TROOPS IN THE DIRECT PATH OF THE GAS CLOUD HAVE SUFFERED AT LEAST 6000 CASUALTIES… MOST OF WHOM DIED WITHIN TEN MINUTES OF ASPIRATING THE CHLORIN GAS INTO THEIR LUNGS… THE PRIMARY ACTION OF THE CHLORIN GAS WAS TO FORM HYPOCHLOROUS ACID WITHIN THE MOIST TISSUES OF THE NOSE, MOUTH, TRACHEA, BRONCHII, AND LUNGS… THIS RESULTED IN RAPID TISSUE DESTRUCTION AND ASPHYXIATION WITH DEATH IN MINUTES…FURTHER ANALYSIS BY DOCTORS AND NURSES IN THE FIELD WILL FOLLOW…  BECAUSE OF THE GAS ATTACK, AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF MEN RESULTED IN A 6.5 KM GAP IN THE FRONT LINE, WITH NO DEFENSES - INFANTRY, ARTILLERY, AND GRENADES WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO PROTECT THE LINE, WITH COMPLETE CHAOS AND TOTAL DISARRAY RESULTING… THE BRAVE MEN WHO WERE STATIONED IN THIS SECTOR SHOULD NOT BE CRITICISED IN ANY WAY FOR THEIR INABILITY TO STAND THEIR GROUND… IF IT WERE POSSIBLE TO DO SO, THESE BRAVE FRENCH SOLDIERS WOULD HAVE… WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTION AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO WITHSTAND ANY ATTACK SUCH AS THIS IN THE FUTURE… BRITISH AND FRENCH COMMAND ARE ENLISTING ANY AND ALL PERSONS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL SCIENCES TO ASSIST IN METHODS OF PREPERATION AND PROTECTION AGAINST SUCH ATTACKS IN THE FUTURE.  FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE DISPATCHED AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE…
