How did Mulan compare to Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast? (those are the only two remakes I've seen so far)
I was a big fan of both Cinderella and BatB. They did great in giving Cinderella more of an interesting message, and they fleshed out her relationship with the prince rather well. I am 100% obsessed with BatB. It got some weird flack because of the “unrealistic costumes” (it’s a FANTASY movie set in PRETEND FANTASY FRANCE, give it a rest people!), but I really don’t care. The added characters, the slight tweaks to Belle and Maurice, it all works out great and the actors really delivered awesome performances.
Mulan falls short. I understand that there was an honest attempt at making the movie a more respectful version of the Chinese story, taking into account their culture and values, and even making it more aesthetically similar to Chinese movies (you can see it in the fight scenes a lot) but I think ultimately it’s a lackluster performance. They could have made the positive changes AND delivered a better movie, this is not a case of “either A or B”. Also there is NO good reason to remove Shang. Not a one. The romantic subplot is downplayed and I’m 100% okay with that, but why did we have to get a totally different love interest? Like, substitute this new guy for Shang (I agree with him not being her commanding officer) and there you go!
My biggest criticism is her reveal as a woman. It felt forced, like suddenly she goes “I can’t be a warrior if I’m lying about myself” and BAM, she outs herself. I wish we could have seen her, say, struggle to fight but also protect her identity (like, perhaps worrying that her hair will become undone, or that her breast-band is coming lose) and then she realises that she can either fight with all her potential and save her troop or protect her identity and she choses the later. Actually I would’ve liked that a lot.
Also there are some questionable aesthetic choices when it comes to traditional Chinese make-up that make no sense if you take into account that CHINESE movies made IN CHINA do not hold to that aesthetic and do not depict traditional make-up like that at all.
It’s not a bad movie. It’s also not a good movie. If I had to recommend a Disney live action remake that you hadn’t seen I’d mention Aladdin. That was actually surprisingly good. Mulan is also enjoyable (this is not a The Lion King scenario) but only if you into it with moderate expectations.
