Hi Guys, Menagerie rabbit in residence Ophelia here! (I'm the white bunny on the top left 😄) Spring is in the air and Easter is right around the corner. I'm seeing lots of people talking about getting a baby bunny for the holidays and I thought it was a good time for a PSA! Did you know Easter is when the rabbit rescues get flooded with unwanted pets? I myself was in just such a situation before I came to live at the Menagerie last June. Rabbits are not an easy pet to care for and we need just as much attention (if not more!) than a dog (did you know we also need to be spayed and neutered just like your canine friends?). Plus we can live for 10+ years! I know baby bunnies are the cutest ever, but impulse buying an animal is never a good idea. If you want to take the plunge and become a rabbit owner, do lots of research first to make sure rabbits are really for you and then go check out your local shelter! But if you're looking for an easier to care for pet, I hear the Menagerie has one or two baby Jackalopes looking to be adopted! Think before you shop! #repost from @rescuepetsofinstagram Did you know more than 80% of bunnies bought for Easter will not live to see their first Birthday? Oftentimes they are abandoned, or neglected, when they grow out of their adorable tiny bunny stage. Those precious poofy bunnies WILL grow into adult rabbits. They WILL require as much (or more!) care as a cat or dog. They will require vet visits. They will need their litter pan cleaned out. They will need at least 30+ hours of exercise every week - they cannot stay in a small cage 24/7. They will need proper nutrition, including fresh veggies & clean water daily! Bunnies (& baby chicks🐣) are not toys. When shopping for an Easter present, please choose chocolate or plush animals! If your family has thought through the responsibility of owning a bunny, and you think you're ready for the 10 year commitment, please visit your local shelter and choose adoption!!! If you can't find any adoptable rabbits right away, wait a month and check again. The shelters will soon be filling up with unwanted Easter bunnies. #MakeMineChocolate #ChooseChocolate
