Chop Shop, 711 Foothill Blvd., La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011
Chop Stop took over the old Penguin’s Frozen Yogurt shop, a La Canada institution for 3 decades. RIP, Penguin’s. I like a good salad, so I was looking forward to trying Chop Stop, a salad chain, for the first time. The menu includes menu chops (signature chopped salads), design your own chopped salad, chopurritos (like a burrito but without the tortilla), soups, and pretzel sticks. You can add a soda and/or grab a bag of chips. All the chops and chopurritos can can ordered as a wrap.
Salads are made to order. They’re fine with substitutions. The house mix is iceberg and spinach. Some items are premium (+ 75 cents). Order at the counter. They’ll call your name when your order is ready.
* Wasabi veggie chop ($10.49): Chopped salad with avocado, edamame, tomato, cucumber, beets, almonds, wasabi delight dressing. I chose a base of spinach and quinoa. Things (beets, cucumbers) were chopped too finely, so there was little crunch. The spinach was even chopped! The almonds were chopped. It tasted like a side salad. It needed more crunch. The wasabi dressing had a nice wasabi flavor though I would have liked a stronger kick. I was still hungry after I finished the salad. Mendocino Farms has much better salads for about the same price, better ingredients and crunchier.
The interior is cheerful and very green. It reminds me of being at Subway.
3 out of 5 stars.
