Day 15
Dance wise, concept is just as important as lines. Placement of movements is very important but the way you distribute your energy throughout your body is what really defines a motion. Lines are for precision and togetherness when putting it on a group of people. But proper arm and leg placements alone from a performing aspect, lacks the extraordinary appeal that motion with meaning has. Combine these two, and you have a great dancer. But from there, if they haven’t already, every dancer must learn to find their voice when learning or creating a piece. If you get too focused on the details, you lose the essence of what the piece is supposed to be. When teaching, if you are as detailed about your choreography as I am, you must guide your students through the idea, the point, the motions behind your choreography. If you want them to feel something, give them something more than just moves. Help them open up, teach them to be genuine and to let go of the judgemental part of them that holds them back from being extraordinary. If you read this, I hope this means something to you.
I’m glad I was finally able to put this into words.
