Chouun is a general who serves Kousonsan, the governor of Yuushuu. Unlike most of the other humans, he doesn’t dislike the maozoku and instead thinks their cat ears are cute. He’s super tennen and able to say the most embarrassing things without realizing. Chouun first meets Kanu while looking for Toutaku’s house in Rakuyou and eventually grows very close to the maozoku.
Chouun’s route is one of the 3 I would recommend most for Jyuzaengi, along with Sousou and Ryuubi. The reason being it’s the only route that reveals Kanu’s parentage. Of course if you don’t care about that then his route is actually rather pointless. I didn’t really like replaying his route because it’s one of those where I just want to keep facepalming.
Chouun's route actually branches fairly early. If you view all his peach garden stories in Rakuyou, it’ll trigger a different version of the battle against Kayuu.
*spoilers after the cut*
After they part ways in Rakuyou, Chouun and Kanu are reunited when the various warlords gather to fight Toutaku. Chouun had not known Kanu would be at the frontlines until he sees her charging towards Kayuu alone and defeats Kayuu. During the banquet, Kanu is introduced to Kousonsan and after that Chouun talks to her and hugs her, saying that she doesn’t have to carry everything alone and if she wants he’ll help her anytime. Kanu apologizes for worrying him and runs off.
At Koroukan, Chouhi enters maozoku berserk mode again and this time it’s Chouun who knocks him out. Ryofu retreats, Toutaku sets Rakuyou on fire as usual, and the maozoku are free to go back to their village. The village is burnt down so everyone follows Chouun to Yuushuu.
Kanu grows closer to Chouun during their days in Yuushuu and one day kanu saves this little girl from Enshou’s soldiers. As thanks, the girl’s family invite Kanu to a festival in their village so she attends with Chouun. After the festival, Kanu thanks Chouun and says she had fun, and Chouun blushes because it’s the first time he has seen her laughing so happily.
Chouun spends more time bonding with Kanu and the maozoku until one day, Kousonsan sends the two of them as envoys to Enshou’s camp. Enshou explains that the invasion previously was not ordered by him and he has already punished the culprit and put his head on a spike. So Chouun and Kanu reports this to Kousonsan.
More peaceful days pass, until news arrives of Enjutsu invading Joshuu. Seeing how troubled everyone looks, Ryuubi decides they should help so as usual the maozoku and Chouun go to Joshuu. Nevertheless, they are outnumbered by Enjutsu’s army and the battle isn’t going well, until Enshou arrives to help.
Since Touken is old Enshou recommends Ryuubi as governor of Joshuu and it’s decided that the maozoku will stay there. Kousonsan asks Chouun to stay with them as an envoy so he happily agrees.
Kanu and Chouun grow closer, with her cutting his hair for him and Chouun comforting her during a stormy night since Kanu is afraid of thunder. Talk of Chouun returning to Yuushuu comes up and Kanu says she’ll be lonely when he’s gone. One day, a messenger arrives with news that Kousonsan’s health is failing so Chouun and Kanu hurry to Yuushuu.
Kousonsan is happy to see Kanu and asks to speak to her alone. He tells her of this maozoku female he met in the forest while being pursued by enemy soldiers, and how she helped him escape. He fell in love with her and brought her home, planning to marry her, but his family disapproved and his father chased her away. Kousonsan has not seen her since. He tells Kanu the girl’s name was Sekiran and asks Kanu to find her so Kousonsan can meet her one last time.
Kanu agrees, returns to Joshuu, and asks Heisei about it. When Heisei hears Sekiran’s name, he reveals to Kanu that Sekiran was a nickname Kanu’s mother used when they were kids. Probably only her osananajimi Heisei still knows about this nickname since everyone else calls her Kanrei.
Sekiran was shunned when she returned for being pregnant with a human’s child so one day after Kanu was born, she left the village, leaving Seihei a note saying she wants to atone for her sins and in return, please raise Kanu as one of the maozoku. Seihei looked for Sekiran but she was already dead when he found her.
Sekiran had refused to tell anyone who Kanu’s father was but now that they have both sides of the story, it’s almost certain her father is Kousonsan. Kanu talks to Chouun about this and he encourages her to meet Kousonsan and tell him the truth.
Kanu and Chouun return to Yuushuu and shows Kousonsan an omamori her mother had left behind. Kousonsan immediately recognizes it as the one he had given Sekiran years ago and is surprised but happy to learn he has a daughter and it’s Kanu. He apologizes for not being there for her all these years but from now on he’ll do his best to fulfill his role as her parent. Kousonsan tells Kanu from now on he should serve Kanu just like he has served him.
Kanu now has servants attending to her and even Chouun speaks to her very formally, calling her ‘Hime’ instead of her name. This distance between them upsets Kanu but since Chouun is super loyal and has been told to serve her, he insists on keeping his distance, only agreeing to drop the formal speech.
Kousonsan organizes a banquet, with Kanu seated in a place of honour and everyone wonders why. When Kousonsan announces to everyone that Kanu is his daughter, they are all shocked, especially Kousonsan’s younger brother Kousonetsu.
Kousonetsu is upset because since Kousonsan had no children, he was next in line to rule Yuushuu but now with Kanu, his position as the heir apparent has been usurped. He gets drunk and starts ranting at Kanu about how it’s her fault but Chouun chases him off. Chouun tells Kanu that since he has sworn loyalty to Kousonsan, he will serve her as well and to order him as she sees fit.
Kanu starts looking unwell so Chouun stretches out his hand to check if she has a fever, but stops because she is his lord’s daughter. Chouun tells her he can no longer treat her the day he did before. Now that Kousonsan has made Kanu his heir, whoever marries Kanu will inherit Yuushuu. However, the fact that he’ll be beside her and protecting her won’t change. Kanu is upset because he’s only saying this as a vassal. She tells him even though he is so near, he feels so distant, and returns to her room.
On the way Kanu meets Kousonsan, and asks him tell her more about her mother. Kanu thinks about the parent-child bond she has found thanks to Chouun, but in return she has lost the bond she had with Chouun. The next day, Chouun comes to her room telling her Kousonetsu has rebelled and set the place on fire. He tells her to run but Kanu doesn’t want to abandon her father.
Chouun and Kanu look for Kousonsan and eventually find him speaking to Kousonetsu. Kousonetsu says he will spare his life and kill only Kanu if Kousonsan abdicates in favour of him but Kousonsan refuses. Chouun secures and opening for Kanu to escape with Kousonsan, but Kousonetsu orders his archers to kill Kanu. Kousonsan shields her and is fatally wounded.
Kanu cries, telling him not to leave her alone and finally calling Kousonsan ‘dad’, which makes him happy. His last words to Chouun are to stay beside Kanu and protect her until the day she gets married.
Chouun and Kanu escape from the burning castle and encounter Enshou, who offers to help them. With Enshou backing them, Kanu and Chouun convince Kousonetsu’s soldiers to surrender and the rebellion is over.
Kanu is now busy being the new ruler of Yuushuu with Chouun still being very distant. The maozoku visit and the topic of marriage comes up. Kantei suggests Chouun, since he is a respected general and gets along well with the maozoku.
That night, Chouun meets Seihei, who talks to him about the distance between him and Kanu now. Chouun says that since Kousonsan ordered him to protect Kanu until she gets married, that meant he isn’t considered among those who can marry Kanu.(I really want to smack the guy at this point -_-)
Chouun gets even more unhappy when Enshou tells Chouun that it’s Kousonsan’s will that he marries Kanu. Since Kanu had previously praised Enshou, when Kanu talks to Chouun about marriage, Chouun automatically thinks she’s talking about Enshou.
He requests that Kanu give him a job away from the city because he doesn’t want to watch her be snatched away from another guy from the front row seat, so Kanu sends him to defend the border. Enshou brings news about Sousou’s army invading and burning villages so Kanu goes to fight. However, when she confronts Sousou he has no idea what she’s talking about with the villages.
During the fight he asks if she really thinks Enshou will leave the maozoku alone once he has obtained her country and tells Kanu he is probably her only ally. Sousou grabs her arm and tells her to come with him but Chouun arrives to save the day...
Before acting all cold and going off once Sousou retreats and tells her to be happy with Enshou.
Chouun finds out Enshou’s army, led by the generals Bunshuu and Ganryou are about to attack Joshuu. It’s all part of Enshou’s plan to use the maozoku to defeat Sousou before taking over their land. Kanu has been tricked and is in danger, so the maozoku tell Chouun to leave Joshuu to them and go to her. Chouun says he’ll protect her even if he can’t be together with her, which irritates Chouhi so he knocks some sense into Chouun with a punch(one of the best things Chouhi did this game).
Seihei tells Chouun since he was like a son to Kousonsan, Kousonsan would have wanted him to be happy too. Chouun then says he has been an idiot and rides off to Kanu’s aid.
Bad End:
Chouun is wounded and surrounded by Enshou’s soldiers on the way back to Yuushuu. He dies calling out Kanu’s name.
Kanu is speaking to Enshou and he tells her to leave everything to him and he’ll protect her because he loves her... Until the day he gets tired of her.
True End:
Enshou visits Kanu and brings her medicine to ease her fatigue. She drinks it before telling him what Sousou said about Enshou only making use of the maozoku, asking him if it’s true. Enshou decides there’s no longer a need to play the nice guy and reveals that he was the one who had spurred Enjutsu’s attack of Joshuu and Kousonetsu’s rebellion. He also tells her her maozoku friends are all going to be killed.
Kanu’s pissed but can’t fight him because the medicine he had given her was actually an anesthetic. He comments that how her ears are trembling is not bad and that she’s going to be his new toy. Chouun arrives just in time to save her and escapes carrying Kanu because she can’t walk.
When resting that night, Chouun hugs Kanu and apologizes for leaving her alone. He finally confesses to her and tells her he’ll always be protecting her from now on. Chouun says the two of them are like the half moon, half shrouded in darkness. She is the light and he is the shadow, never leaving each other.
They arrive at Joshuu and defeat Bunshuu and Ganryou. This causes Enshou to start ranting about how he’s not dying alone and tells Kanu to die with him. Chouun gets pissed and kills the douchebag and all is well.
The maozoku hold a banquet to celebrate. Enjutsu is super happy they’ve killed his annoying relative Enshou. Even Chouryou is present, because he was in Joshuu to get some cosmetics for Ryofu and Ryuubi invited him. The topic of Kanu’s marriage comes up again and Ryuubi and Enjutsu both volunteer lol. Chouryou says he’ll make her wedding dress and starts hugging her to take her measurements.
Chouun gets jealous and drags Kanu off to a room, telling her she’s not being wary enough of all the guys. He complains about her dress being too low cut and gives her a hickey so she’ll have to cover up and the two of them have their lovey dovey time. :3
Vita port epilogue:
Kanu is swamped with work and since both of them are busy, they’ve not been having as much alone time as they would like. Kanu decides to take a break so Chouun carries her to the bed and the two of them lie down. Chouun starts kissing her, but then Kanu reminds him they still have work so Chouun tells her they’ll continue tonight lol.
Kousonsan was such a nice ossan. So sad that he died coz of Kousonetsu’s idiotic rebellion. Chouun is a nice guy but really irritated me the way he kept on going about being a vassal and serving Kanu and not being eligible to be her husband. Completing his bad end unlocks Enshou’s mini route. What joy ._.
