CHRIS BURCH Chris Burch has been creating traditional landscape paintings for many years and is now producting non-objective work as well, which he considers an important part of his creative journey as an artist. He states, “Creating nonobjective art provides a unique outlet for ideas and sometimes unexpected results not easily incorporated into objective images.”
Born in Eden, North Carolina, he describes himself as “being solidly planted in the mainstream of selt-taught artists” and believe that all artists eventually teach themselves, regardless of who helps them along the way. “Making art is essentially a solitary endeavor that must find resolution in individual experience and expression which opens the door for both objective and non-objective expression.” He sees his art as part of an internal drive to create, regardless of inspiration, and emphasizes that landscape art remains a source of accomplishment and satisfaction for him as well.
DAVID EAKIN David Eakin is a signature member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. His work has been included in many juried exhibitions throughout the country, and he has won awards in both regional and national exhibitions. Most recently. David’s painting “The Dance” (2018) received the Philadelphia Water Color Society Award at the Baltimore Watercolor Society Mid-Atlantic Exhibition. David says, “Painting—especially landscapes—enables me to view and react to the world and the people around me . . . Experimenting with different media and using new techniques enables me to explore the constantly changing visual world that so often goes unseen—the light at a particular time of day, the color of shadows extending across a field, trees that become figures.”
A Virginia native, David holds art degrees from both Ferrum College and Lynchburg College. He has continued his watercolor studies with instructors in this area for many years and has been studying oil and gouache since 1999. His work can be found at Riverviews Artists’s Co-Op Gallery as well as many other venues in the area, including his studio at The Art on 12th Studios at the Art Box. In addition, David is the chairman of the annual Lynchburg Art Club Festival and has served as co-chair of the Virginia Watercolor Society’s annual exhibit.
RODNEY LAUGHON Rodney Laughon started painting in his thirties. He later retired to paint full-time and has been doing so for twenty years. Self-taught, his techniques are the results of studying art in museums and galleries along with countless hours of painting and experimentation. Along the way he developed his own style with a concern for detail firmly rooted in traditional American landscape painting, in the Romantic Realism of the Hudson River School. He explains he paints in a Realist manner, but one that reflects Impressionist influences as well. Over the years, he has won awards and had his work included in public, private, and corporate collections.
While best known for his works depicting the mountain, streams, and valleys of Virginia and North Carolina, he has enjoyed traveling and painting seascapes from both east and west coasts. He has also produced a body of work based on subjects from the American West. He feels his most significant works are “the scenes of pristine mountains and rivers, of farms, fields, and old country roads that remind the viewer of an earlier, more peaceful time”—a time and sense of tranquility he feels are still accessible through his work.
