@linhable4ever‘s questions:
christinyaa andswered: I kind of alternate between the two; I think it depends on who I’m talking to. And I’m from central Virginia, USA
thelovelyrichardmadden answered: In the UK, route is pronounced /ru:t/, rhyming with root.Yet, the pron /raʊt/, rhyming with shout, is rout, meaning, generally, various kinds of gatherings of people (as a noun) and defeat (as a verb). Help?
godyoutalkpretty reblogged and added: In England, it is pronounced root. I think American’s pronounce it rowt.
asongofliesandmurder said: I say it with the “could” pronunciation, but I live in California & have heard it both ways! :)
tolkienovertwilight answered: Both are correct! “Root” or “R-ow-t”
whythursdaynext reblogged and added: If it’s a highway, such as Route 66, then “root” If I’m telling you where to go, it rhymes with about. (This route is faster…etc.) Welcome to American English! at least in the Midwest.
habitualfacepalmer answered: it’s pronounced like “about”. English is weird, I know.
writteninsane answered: I’ve heard it both ways in America?? I’ve /said/ it both ways, oh boy. I think the proper pronounciation is the “about” sound, though.
myownsuperintendent answered: I would most likely pronounce it exactly like “root,” but I could also pronounce it like in “about.” I’m American, from the northeast.
fezthepalindrome said: Route, as far as I know, can be pronounced with both the “ou” sound of “about” and the “oo” sound of “moot”. At least in American English.
asthebelltolls nswered: “Route” is pronounced like “root” or “r-out”; it depends on where you’re from, usually.
Thank you so much for all the answers!!! It helped to figure out about the word, and how it’s a complete mess to decide how you actually should say it. BUt I’ll keep using “route” as “root”, since that’s how I usually hear it, and how we learned at school
Also my father was really surprised about how many answers I got - so thank you :)
