Part of Eva's new clip on IGTV!! Michael Faraday and the @ri_science have had a major positive influence on our STEM outreach and learning. A lot is owed to his genius and creativity and Eva's 2nd entry in @movaglobes #StayHomeScienceFair is also a tribute to him and the place he called home for the better part of his life. Faraday knew the value of early education and sought to inspire the next generation of thinkers and scientists. His most enduring work in this area are the #ChristmasLectures series he started that are still going strong today. This is where he often performed the candle experiment for kids in the audience. On top of all this, the 2019 #ChristmasLectures clips are now live on YouTube! Yay!! We've got some absolutely fantastic news - today we hit 700,000 subscribers on our YouTube channel! To mark the occasion, we put together this little Iodine clock reaction to demonstrate chemical kinetics – the rates of reaction.⠀ We actually have two reactions happening here – the first, ‘slow’ reaction produces triiodide, and then the second, ‘fast’ reaction uses thiosulfate to reconvert the triiodide into iodide ions, much faster than it is created by the first reaction.⠀ Once all the thiosulfate is used up we see the very dark blue-black colour from the triiodide reacting with soluble starch.⠀ To get our 7 clocks to go sequentially in 7(ish) seconds, Dave from our L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre increased the concentration of thiosulphate from as we go from beaker 1 to beaker 7, which delays the reaction speed.
