Everett stared at Celeste as she walked away. Maybe she could help him figure out what was going on at the bakery. But he didn’t want to weird her out.
“Hey! Heyyyyyy! Evs!” Dakota waved their hand in front of Everett’s face to get his attention. When Everett snapped out of his trance and looked over to Dakota, they cocked their head to the side, with a confused and concerned look. “Is everything good?”
“Everything is alright, Kotes.” Everett leaned back in his chair and sighed. “Y’all ever like..wondered if the bakery is not what you think? Like it might be the reason people are going missing?”
Dakota and Owen looked at each other then back at Everett. They were both very confused about what he just said.
“Uh…are you like…high or something or are you being for real?” Owen asked.
“No, Owen I am not on any drugs.” Everett scowled at him. “Think of it. The people who went missing all went to the bakery before they were kidnapped. Most of them are spouses. And from what I heard, the owner is a widower.”
Dakota thought about it for a moment before giving Everett an anxious look. “I mean..it is a BIT weird how they all went to the bakery before they were kidnapped. But isn’t the bakery REAL popular? Anyone could go missing even if they didn’t go there.”
“And wouldn’t the bakery like- be put on a watchlist if everyone who goes missing went there?” Owen added. “Not sure how that would work, Evs.”
“Just bear with me, okay? I know I sound crazy, but I swear, I’m not trying to.”
“I just need proof..”
***************
Celeste walked home with coffee in her hand. She never liked coffee but Jaqueline said that they had the best Latte at that shop.
She would’ve hated to upset her and to decline her offer.
She looked at her phone to see that her dad still didn’t respond to her messages. She wasn’t surprised. He never answers them. She doesn’t even see him at all, having dinner on her own, him leaving school events early etc.
Sometimes it felt like they didn't know each other.
She absolutely hated it but she shouldn’t.
“It’s hard owning a bakery…” she said to herself “he’s just working to provide food for us..he cares about me...”
“..Right?”
Celeste passed the bakery and saw her dad outside of it, talking to one of the workers there. Celeste hesitantly walked over to them and tapped him on the shoulder.
“H-Hi, dad!”
He turned around to look at her. He didn’t look happy to see her, his eyes dead and emotionless. The tall figure stood over her and she couldn’t help but fidget with her sweater to ease the nervous energy. It got worse when he spoke; “Hello, Celeste.”
“Hi..! Uhm…I-i was just wondering if you were…” she trailed off.
“You already know the answer to that. Besides, you’re seventeen, you can eat dinner alone again.”
She couldn’t. She hated how alone she felt when eating. The silence was deafening for each bite she took.
“…y-yeah..I can..”
“Then why did you ask me?”
Celeste stayed silent before speaking up again.
“Uhm..m-maybe we can like- try to spend time w-“
Before Celeste could even finish, her dad was called inside and walked back into the bakery.
“D-Dad, wait..!”
He didn’t listen and disappeared into the kitchen. Celeste looked down at the ground, frustrated but didn’t want to show it. She then looked at the employee that he was talking to. A tall man, black hair but most of it was dyed brunette. He was looking away from her which gave her an idea. She slowly crept up to him and raised her fist, smirking, attempting to punch his arm and when she struck, she was immediately blocked by him.
“What do you think you're doing, girl?” The man said, chuckling. “You can’t just do that without giving me a warning.”
“Aww! I thought I would get you this time! Dang it.”
“You’re gonna have to try harder, bud.”
She chuckled. Her laughing them came to a halt when her mind went back to her father. She looked up at the co-worker and Celeste very timidly asked the man something.
“Uncle Leo, why does dad never talk to me..?”
Leo gave her a sad look before sighing.
“Sweetie..listen. I understand that you’re upset with dad not paying attention to you that much but..he’s trying, honestly he is..I can assure you, just wait a few more months and you’ll be making memories with him in no time!”
Celeste gasped. “Wait..Do you think we can hang out on my birthday??”
“...You guys haven't celebrated your birthday together..?”
“No..not that much anymore..on my birthday, we just talk, he gives me money to buy things and I just eat cupcakes. That’s kind of what's been going on since I was..seven??”
Leo stared at her for a moment. Celeste started to get anxious, thinking that she had said something to upset him. “I-I’m sorry..! I’ll leave!” Celeste walked away quickly as Leo just stood there. He went inside the bakery, looking at all the customers enjoying their treats, unaware of the horrors of what they were made with. He went into the back of the bakery, walking until he stopped at the door to the basement. He took a deep breath before descending all the way down the stairs, the smell of iron getting more and more strong.
The Slaughter Room. At least that's what they called it. The room that was hidden from the outside world, a room that no one had to know about.
Leo looked around, seeing blood splattered on the walls, the flour, the mixer so that no one will find the flesh in their pastry, the organs laid out on a small table with someone chopping it up with a cleaver.
Christopher Cromwell. Father of Celeste Cromwell and the owner of the most popular bakery in San Francisco. He was there in an apron, chopping what was supposed to be someone's liver up into little pieces before taking one and popping it in his mouth as he couldn’t help but smile. A smile so wide, it even creeped Leo out.
“Yo, boss!” Leo tapped him on the shoulder. Christopher turned around, now facing Leo.
“Hello, Leonardo. What is it that you need?”
“Damn. Is that supposed to be that woman’s liver? The one we killed last night?”
Christopher couldn’t help but chuckle. “Of course it is. Her organs will be divine ingredients for the bakery. The liver, it will be baked into a cake. A carrot cake.”
Leo wrinkled his nose a little, disgusted at the thought of carrot cake.
“Who likes carrot cake? Yuck.”
“I like carrot cake.”
“You mean you like MEAT cake?”
“Well aren’t you a smartass!” Christopher picked up a piece of liver and gave it to Leo.
“Care for a piece?” He asked him. Leo’s smile grew as wide as his.
“Absolutely.” Leo said as he took the meat from him and put it in his mouth, savoring the taste for a moment. He then gave Christopher a concerned look.
“So uh…” Leo paused before continuing. “A little birdie told me you don’t celebrate her birthdays that much.”
“Who?”
“Your daughter, ya klutz!”
“Oh! Her! Well did she now? Hm, isn’t that cute?” Christopher brushed his daughter off, as if he didn’t care. Leo got a little ticked but he kept his cool. He couldn’t just yell at his boss, he’ll get fired.
Or even worse.
Leo fidgeted with his shirt for a little bit before gaining the courage to speak up. “So..what’cha gonna do about that? She’s gonna find out eventually..”
“She will. Once she turns 18, she will be a perfect employee for the bakery. Besides, you DID show her how to defend herself since you were a gang member before you got a job here, Leo, so she’ll be strong enough to crack a skull open.” Christopher ranted on, spinning his cleaver.
“And how are you going to make her work for you if she doesn’t want to hurt anyone? I’ve seen the girl! She literally APOLOGIZES to PLUSHIES when she bumps into them.”
Christopher laughed before putting the spinning of his cleaver to a stop. He looked at Leo dead in the eyes before speaking. “I’m her father, right? She cares about me and wants to do ANYTHING to make me happy so…”
