I’ve just found another of those comments from people comparing LA Eric with animated Eric and simping from LA Eric because “He ShArEs SiMiLaR iNtErEsTs WiTh ArIeL”, “He SaYs ThAt HeR nAmE iS bEaUtIfUL, wRiTtEn In ThE sTaRs” and “He HuGs HeR wHeN sHe TuRnS bAcK iNtO a MeRmAiD” and I was like:

In my opinion, in the live action movie, Disney essentially turned Eric into a carbon copy of Ariel (I’m talking about the fact that they both like to collect objects and they also made Eric having a strict parent) but for me, two people in love don’t necessarily have to be mirror images of each other to be a good match; they can also be quite different (in fact, 1989’s Ariel and Eric had both things in common and things they were different from each other, and that was perfectly fine). I don’t even think this means “adding depth to a character”, because in my opinion, Disney was just being lazy. It just copy-pasted Ariel’s obsession on collecting things and her family’s situation on Eric.

Speaking of Eric’s opinion on Ariel’s name, and speaking as a person with an unusual name myself, animated Eric’s reaction is a normal reaction from another person, not a bad one. Animated Eric said “It’s kinda pretty” as if to say: “Well, I’ve never heard your name before, and at first I thought it’s a little bit unusual, but looking back it’s really pretty”. For this reason, animated Eric's reaction seems absolutely realistic to me, while LA Eric's reaction seemed exaggerated and out of context, considering he'd only known Ariel for a short time and already said something so corny after just learning her name. I don’t care about the fact that “this is a fantasy movie”, because yes, it’s true that this is a fantasy movie, but I’m saying that Eric wasn’t the “fantasy part”, Ariel was. Eric was just a common human boy who suddenly found himself experiencing incredible situations (like being saved on the beach by a random woman who sang a love song to him and then disappeared for weeks) and who suddenly also found himself in the middle of a war between mythological sea creatures he wasn’t even sure they were REAL just some moments before.

Also, something that only a few people noticed is that Disney completely changed Eric’s kingdom lore in the live action movie: at the beginning of 1989 TLM the sailors tell Eric some sea stories about King Triton and the merpeople (talking about them with RESPECT and GRATITUDE for having a good weather, something that they absolutely don’t do in the 2023 movie, but I’ll talk better about this later) but they're just stories (maybe not for the sailors, but for other COMMON people, like Grimsby, who don't believe in these things), and these are just SOME sailors believing in these creatures, not ALL of Eric’s people in his kingdom. Instead, at the beginning of TLM 2023, the sailors are READY to harpoon some RANDOM sea animal in the water ONLY because they BELIEVE it's a mermaid (without even be sure of it). Moreover, even Eric’s mother—the Queen herself—criticizes these “sea creatures” speaking with fear. So, in LA Eric's kingdom, Eric’s WHOLE kingdom actually believe that the merpeople exist, it's NOT JUST "a sea story" for them. This is exactly why is JUST unfair comparing two different kingdoms with DIFFERENT pasts, lores and rules.

Moreover, at least for me, LA Eric's hypnotized version was JUST a little bit confused, he almost seemed like a drunken man, but he still had some mental clarity (he still remembered about Ariel). It might sound romantic to some people, but at least to me, this thing just gave vibes like "Ursula used a weak spell". Instead, in the 1989 version, Ursula LITERALLY had to cast a spell on Eric to manipulate him and to make him marry her and not Ariel, she literally had to cast her MOST POWERFUL spell on him... Don't you think this is romantic enough?

Something else that many people often don’t realize is that, at the end of the movie, while just waking up from Vanessa’s hypnosis, Eric had to understand MANY unbelievable things within 10-20 seconds: that he had been hypnotized, that he wasn’t anymore on his balcony at night (probably, the last thing he remembered), that he was on a ship at his OWN wedding, that he was about to marry a random girl he had never seen in his life who wanted to trick him into a non-consensual marriage, after literally depriving him of his free will, that the cute, mute girl he was falling in love with had finally recovered her voice, and that her voice was exactly the one he had heard on the beach (here Eric, first of all, is happy that Ariel has somehow recovered her voice, and only later is he happy that her voice was exactly what he had been looking for for so long: now, that’s true love, it’s also about altruism. This doesn’t happen in the LA movie instead: LA Eric just says “It’s always been you”, and he just says that he should have understood that Ariel was the girl he was in love with, he wasn’t SO surprised EXACTLY because him and his WHOLE kingdom were ALREADY SURE about merpeople’s existance, unlike animated Eric and his WHOLE kingdom). But then the girl who wanted to force him to marry her turned into a monstrous half-woman, half-octopus creature, and the girl he was in love with turned into a mermaid and was kidnapped by ugly creature... and, after a few seconds of shock (LEGIT, he didn’t even know mermaids existed just some seconds before, give my boy some rest), Eric didn’t even care that Ariel was a mermaid and still goes to save her on a mere lifeboat and with only a harpoon as a weapon (against what was literally a sea monster), because “I’ve already lost her once, I won’t lose her again” (in my opinion, one of the best love declarations in a Disney movie, and LA Eric doesn’t do that), risking his OWN life to make sure she was safe, also proving to King Triton that not all humans are evil (ANOTHER thing that LA Eric doesn’t do).
