Schmigadoon! Stage Adaptation Will Make World Premiere at Kennedy Center

Apple TV+'s Emmy-winning musical theatre series Schmigadoon! is headed to the stage. Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by series creator Cinco Paul, the work will get a world premiere staging at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center in 2025, with performances running January 31-February 9 in the Eisenhower Theater. Christopher Gattelli, who choreographed both seasons of the series, will direct and choreograph the stage musical. Press notes indicate the musical will follow the plot of the show's first season, which saw a couple, struggling to save their relationship, who suddenly find themselves in Schmigadoon, a magical world populated with characters, plots, songs, and dance numbers inspired by Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma!, The Music Man, and Carousel. Press notes indicate audiences can expect to hear Paul's songs from the series—including the Emmy-winning "Corn Puddin'," plus new tunes. The production is being presented by special arrangement with Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video, which produced the series.

So we all know the story of how Christopher Gatelli won a Tony for the Newsies choreography literal minutes before the cast went onstage to perform said choreography, right? Well, I always find it hilarious how the song they chose to do was Seize the Day, which starts with Jeremy Jordan’s mediocre at best little dance solo. (I love him dearly but you all know exactly what I’m talking about)

So I love imagining people who don’t know the Newsies choreography very well watching them win a Tony and being like “I mean this is good, but I feel like there are other sho-OH MY GOSH WHAT THE FRICK HOW DID THEY DO THAT”

We all know that Marlene Danielle is the longest-running Bombalurina, and that she played the entire Broadway run from 1982 to its close in 2000.

Here’s another fun fact, though:

She keeps her eyes peeled for the beads that invariably come flying off the costume of Mr. Mistoffelees whenever he does one of his daredevil spins. "They're Austrian crystals, very expensive, gorgeous," she says. "I collect them. I've got a bud vase in my dressing room filled almost up to the top... Newsies Dance Analysis p1

that I just never got around to posting... oops

The choreographer is Christopher Gattelli, who is literal magic. He danced with Alvin Ailey and David Howard(if you don't know dance, those are really good) and has backgrounds in ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and tap. He has been involved in lots of shows, on and off-broadway, such as Newsies(obviously), Godspell, The King and I, and also worked on South Pacific (which he was nominated for the Tony Award for best choreography) and many more. He is also gay and married to Stephen Bienskie. The style of dance in Newsies is the closest to how he says he dances,  "This is exactly how I danced. So for me to tell a story in this way was the most comfortable and the most exciting for me.". This style isn't exactly specific, more a  mixture of contemporary(or modern, for the non-dance people), ballet, and more elements of gymnastics and tap.
