Extraordinary Sketchbooks
Extract:
‘A sketchbook is a safe and respected object to work in. People don’t feel hostility towards them as they might if you use a camera. In India lots of people asked me to draw them when they saw me working in my sketchbooks, and gave instructions about how they would like to be “picturised”: “Make sure you paint my watch, and don’t forget my moustaches.” Another time in India I found myself completely surrounded by a crowd of onlookers and somebody gave me a cup of coffee but I could hardly move. The coffee spilt all over my book but another person took the sodden book to a nearby cafe and dried it in their oven’ (Christopher Corr).
