Crochet Soot Sprite Pattern from “My Neighbour Totoro” by Studio Ghibli
So – I’ve had this Lion Brand Yearn laying around for some time, planning to do something with it! I just couldn’t figure out how to work it, BUT yesterday I figured it out! <(^.^)< <(^.^)> >(^.^)>
My thought: why not make some friends for this gorgeous, beautiful Totoro Easter Egg, made by Norwegian artist @chrixdesign that arrived in the mail some days ago!:D <3 And so I did!
Check out Chrix awesome work for yourself!
I decided to make the pattern as a tribute to my all time favorite movie and the wonderful designers who make fan art in all shapes and sizes!<3 ^______^ It’s quick and easy to make!
Alright here we go!
YOU WILL NEED:
• Hook 3.5-4.00 metric size (see conversion chart here: http://www.crochet-knit.com/crochet/hook-chart.html ) • Black Fluffy yarn, Lion Brand or alike • Black cotton yarn (with or without reflexes/glitter) • White and black felt • 6mm black safety eyes • Fabric glue • Fiber stuffing
You can vary the size of the sprites depending on the thicknesses of the black yarn you’ve chosen, and adjust eye size accordingly. Chose a hook that is about a size or two larger than what you’d usually use, for the yarn type. The bigger the hook, the easier. The fluffy yarn will make sure there’ll be no holes.
Now, you can choose between black yarn or black yarn with a little glitter in it, as shown on the picture. Both types work, but I found it easier to see the stitches with the glitter yarn. There won’t be much difference on the finished sprite – I made one with each type!
You crochet with double yarn, the fluffy yarn and the cotton yarn together.
Crochet Key: St = single stitch Sc = single crochet Inc = two single crochet in same st Dec = two sc together F/O: finish off.
Explanation: [inc, sc2]x2 = inc, sc, sc two times and so forth. Final number of st’s in the round is indicated by (xx).
PATTERN
R1: MR6 (6) R2: [inc]x6 (12) R3: [inc, sc1]x6 (18) R4: Sc [ inc, sc2]x5, inc, sc (24) R5-7: sc round (24) R8: [inc, sc3]x6 (30) R9: sc round (30) R10: [dec, sc3]x6 (24) R11: sc round (18) Now turn your work inside out, and continue to make and attach the eyes before you continue. R12: [dec, sc2]x6 (12) R13: [dec, sc1]x6 (6) R14: [dec]x6, F/O, hiding tail. It can be hard to do the last round, so you can sew up the opening here if you prefer. You won’t be able to tell the difference.
EYES: Cut out two white circles from felt approx 1cm in diameter, poke a little hole in the middle, poke safety eyes through, and attach at R6, with 1cm space between the eyes. Apply a slight amount of glue to the back of the white Felton the eye,, to make it stick on the sprite.
You can make the eyes with black felt as well, just adding a smaller black circle in the middle of the white in place of safety eyes..
If you hate felt, you can crochet the white for the eyes too, it’s just a regular MR6 and then a round of increases.
VOILA! The Soot Sprite is ‘off the hook’!^_____^ ENJOY! ✿.。.:*♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸
