I like complaining. Can I be so real. I think with the dragon post going around again I’d like to throw my two cents out about art style development for better or worse. Personally, I find the new art style of Warcraft to be kind of… lazy? At times. Obviously this isn’t true for everything and the art direction team works incredibly hard to keep warcraft good and the stylization has kept the game around for now 20 years, but I think the… Disney-fied art style is getting to me.
The distinctive pulp art look of Warcraft is slowly being phased out, and with that a lot of individuality and distinction is being scrubbed away. Even looking at the old world loading screens makes my heart almost ache with nostalgia, which is the devil’s emotion that drags us back, but genuinely it feels like a loss to not see the trend in artstyle continue.
Like these two screens look absolutely fantastic, and the artist who made them is incredible and managed to make these static poses dynamic and interesting and, at times, convey an emotion. We’ve all seen orc contrappasto, and genuinely it’s an incredible thing to be able to convey that sort of sophisticated haughtiness.
And then we have the more recent character art. I’m not saying these artists aren’t impressive, but I’m losing my mind. It looks like it could be Disney concept art. For one, the artist couldn’t convey the East Asian features that Nozdormu has nor could he color Alexstraza with the actual tan she has in game.
Don’t even get me started on the BFA screens and how they convey literal Jack shit. Talanji herself on the Zuldazar screen is beautiful and has a dynamic pose but it’s… lacking. Jaina in hers looks like a bug, and the style doesn’t befit the characters and the long standing style presented to us. Also that for these new continents these images tell us very little about the story. Gorak Tul is not a big bad overarching the narrative in Boralus, and the sethrak and Rezan are marginally better but not emblematic of Zuldazar. Rastakhan art where?
It feels reductive and cheap compared, and hope that it can return to the complicated styles before. Which, again, these art styles below are genuinely impressive and I damn well know I cannot render for shit. But, compared to the burning crusade screen with illidan and Kael’thas it falls short, don’t you think? I hope it isn’t a trend within the industry to homogenize something as wonderfully stylized as wow, and that it can edge a little closer to its roots again, but I’m unsure!
The point was to complain, but I think there’s something deeper here with the indistinct style mixing and narrative direction wow has taken. The lack of time and pay afforded to artists, and a weaker vision and direction. I’m a chronic complainer and I want something pretty to look at, and looking at nozdormu’s indistinct face pisses me off.

and I started thinking about how there are some really scummy MLM "health" things that get marketed and it's really sad that people who sell that stuff prey on some of the most vulnerable people in the world who are desperate for any relief they can find... but also, health insurance exists so ??? there is no ethical choice in my mind
