I'll probably get criticized for this, and I'd never suggest that I didn't enjoy the Harry Potter books (I really did), but I think Diana Wynne Jones' Charmed Life (1977)--the first book in her Chronicles of Chrestomanci-- forever ruined me for any other stories about orphaned boys who discover their family's rich magical legacy. The language was so gorgeously evocative, and the emotions so palpable that nothing similar could ever compare after reading it.
