Francesca Zappia wrote Eliza and Her Monsters, that was a favorite last year, so I was looking forward to reading her new book, Katzenjammer. “Cat lives in her high school. The hallways expand and contract with the school’s breathing. No one can leave and everyone is transforming. Cat must find a way out. To di that, she’ll have to remember what put her there in the first place.” I’m still processing what I read in this book. I may have tried too hard to make meaning out of these imagined characters. The ending explains why Cat sees things the way she does. So many bullies in this book and the ending was incredibly sad. You want Cat to have at least a glimmer of hope but even that moment is ripped away (you just know it’s going to happen) This is YA but there are some violent images in these pages. Zappia writes about people that are on the fringe. I'll probably get criticized for this, and I'd never suggest that I didn't enjoy the Harry Potter books (I really did), but I think Diana Wynne Jones' Charmed Life (1977)--the first book in her Chronicles of Chrestomanci-- forever ruined me for any other stories about orphaned boys who discover their family's rich magical legacy. The language was so gorgeously evocative, and the emotions so palpable that nothing similar could ever compare after reading it.
