The magical realm isn't exactly the afterlife, just a different dimension, but the only way for humans to get there is through death. Because of some convoluted reasons ghouls from the human world infect the magical realm creatures with the ideas of "capitalism" and "progress". That's how Terian, a dark elven warrior mage, finds himself working a painfully boring office job and hating everything about the new way the magical realm is run because of capitalism™. Said job is how he meets a human ghost, Bartholomew, who died in the late 1800s and similarly dislikes the office job he's force to now take up. Soon, the unlikely duo starts getting close and Terian finds out that although Bartholomew can interact with physical objects there's something he's unable to do; eat. They find a way for Bartholomew to possess Terian's body and soon he develops quite a passion for exploring the exotic cuisines of the Magical Realm. Deep feelings soon bloom between them and Terian is unwilling to deny his lover anything that makes him happy. Even when the things that make his lover happy are doing a number on Terian's previously trim waist... After all, if it can make your immortal lives that much more enjoyable, what's a few extra pounds here and there?
