Married Life
Hi all. So it's been a while since I've last written anything and I've had this in the bank for a while, but without courage to post it. However I've now decided what the hell, so here goes, a selection of short stories involving Charlie and Duffy and married life. Please let me know what you think. I'd love to hear your feedback 💛 Alternative Relationship Starter - It had been a long and emotional shift, As Duffy entered the staff room she closed the door behind her and got the fright of her life when she turned to see Charlie sat on the sofa, he sat up when he heard the door open and smiled as he saw her. "what the hell are you playing at? You scared the life out of me” she gasped in a hushed shout. "sorry I didn't mean to make you jump” Charlie laughed as he stood up. Duffy shook her head with a smile “if anyone has ever told you that your in my will Mr Fairhead then they have been very much misinformed” She joked as Charlie laughed. "what are you still doing here anyway. Didn't your shift finish an hour ago?" She asked, moving over to the lockers to retrieve her bag. "I was waiting for you to finish: thought we could maybe go for dinner or a drink?! You look like you could do with cheering up." She paused before turning to face him "or maybe we could get a take away and a bottle of wine and go back to the house?!" She responded catching him off guard "it's been a long day. I just want to go home" she admitted. "we could do this some over night?!" He offered as she shook her head "no, a night in your company sounds like just the tonic I need after today!" She admitted shyly as he smiled "right then Ms Duffin!" He held his arm out to her as she slipped hers through it "what's it to be? Chinese?! Itailian?!" Duffy laughed as they headed out of the building "actually, you know what I fancy?!" She whispered into the cold night air as they began to walk along the dark and quite road that lead back to her apartment, Charlie looked down at her with a smile "a bag of chips and a stroll along the river!" "I thought you wanted to go home?!" He asked as she shrugged "maybe i've changed my mind, maybe I'd rather spend some time with you!" She responded honestly. Charlie couldn't help but smile as she tentatively placed her hand into his and pulled him gently in the direction of the river. They wandered for a while chit-chatting about the day before falling into a comfortable silence. Charlie glanced down to see Duffy shiver "your cold?" It was more of a statement than a question but Duffy shook her head "I'm fine!" She smiled up at him as he raised his eyebrow. "here" he removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders "forever a gentleman" she replied gratefully wrapping it around herself as she moved closer to him, smiling as he placed his arm around her and held her against his side. "Charlie?" They stopped a few yards ahead as she moved herself to stand infront of him and looked down towards the ground. "I need to tell you something" a look of worry spread over Charlie's face as he nodded "I've not been completely honest with you!" She began as he stayed quite allowing her to continue. "I... I didn't come back because of work, I came back because I wanted to see you!" She admitted shyly "I've left Ryan" she added as he met her eyes, his own in a slight state of shock "it's not been working, not for a long time, I don't love him anymore. I Don't think I ever really did!" She was being truthful not only with him but with herself too "you've been married for 15 years!" He reminded her as she sighed "something must have been there!" She shrugged and let out a sigh. "you know, whenever I was upset, or missing home. Or whenever something bad happened, It wasn't the thought of Ryan that made me feel better. It was you!" She admitted as she dove into her bag. "it wasn't Ryan that I wanted" she added as she pulled out a photo. "I've carried this with me for almost 30 years!" Charlie could hear the emotion in her voice as she handed him the picture, he looked down and smiled as the memories of the day rushed back as if they were from yesterday. "I remember, when this was taken, we'd just worked an 18 hour shift, we should have headed home for some sleep, but instead headed for breakfast in some greasy spoon around the corner" he reminded as a small smile formed on Duffy's face at the memory. "you know why I remember it so well?" He asked as she looked up at him and shook her head "I remember it because, I dropped you home and came this close to kissing you!" He admitted holding his fingers a few centimetres apart "but you were married, and I didn't want to be that bloke!" He added with a sigh as she looked back down. "and now?" She asked "What if you had the chance now?" She asked bravely as he met her gaze with his own, his eyes full of surprise, he placed his hand on her cheek, stroking his thumb along her cheekbone as he looked deep into her eyes. "kiss me!" She begged just above a whisper, Charlie didn't need telling twice as he slowly moved forward until there lips were touching, kissing her gently before pulling back and hovering just millimetres apart, Duffy reclosed the small gap between then, her eyes falling shut as there lips remet for a long and meaningful kiss, 30 years of bottled up emotions rolling into that one moment. As he pulled away, Charlie rested his forehead against hers as she let a small sigh escape her lips. "shall I be honest with you now?" Charlie stated as Duffy pulled back to look at him and nodded "I've been dreaming of this moment for 30 years. And do you know why?" He questioned as she shook her head " because I've been in love with you from the very first day I met you." He informed her as a small tear rolled down her cheek. "I don't want to spend anymore years apart!" He informed her, wiping the tear away from her cheek as she lent forward to kiss him again "neither do I!" She whispered as a smile formed on both of there faces. He pulled her into a hug, holding her against him chest and placing a kiss into the top of her head. "So what happens now?" Charlie asked gently a few minutes later as Duffy moved her head from his shoulder to look at him. "now, now you take me home!" She informed him, a knowing and encouraging look in her eye as she rummaged around in her bag for her keys. ~💛~
Married Life
~ Part 2 ~
Duffy woke as the light began to filter its way through the curtians, she sighed as she rolled over and smiled when she saw Charlie lying beside her.
“Morning!” She whispered as he gazed down at her “good morning!” He grinned leaning down to place a kiss into her lips.
“last night was…”
“Awful” she joked, giggling as he began to frown “last night was worth the 3 decade wait!” She responded more seriously as she moved herself closer to rest her head against his chest.
Charlie ran his hand through her hair, he was just about to respond as the phone rang, breaking them from their moment.
Duffy sighed as she moved herself to see the caller, she muted the call and placed the phone face down on the cabinet before turning back to face Charlie.
“who was that?” He asked already knowing the answer as she sighed “no one!” She lied as she place her head back on his chest.
“it was Ryan wasn’t it?” He asked, she sighed again before he felt her nod against his chest.
“I asked him for a divorce, last week. And ever since he hasn’t stopped calling!!” She admitted, and Charlie felt her body begin to tense at the thought of her soon to be ex husband.
“you should answer it? It might stop him from pestering you if he hears your voice!” He stated as the phone rung again and she shook her head.
“it won’t, besides I don’t want to think, or talk about him right now! Not while I’m enjoying this time with you!” She admitted with a smile as she snuggled closer into his side.
They lay for a while enjoying each other’s close company before Duffy broke the silence.
“Is that from when you were shot?!” She asked gently running her fingertips lightly over the scar he had on his chest “indeed!” he replied as she tilted her head up to face him.
“does it hurt?” She asked as he shook his head “it did but not anymore” he replied with a smile as she placed a delicate kiss onto the scar before leaning up and placing another long kiss onto his lips.
"We need to get ready for work!” She sighed pulling away a few minutes later.
“can I take you out tonight? Dinner somewhere nice?” He asked as she smiled shyly “I’d like that” she admitted as he kissed her one final time.
Charlie placed his hand on her knee as the pulled into the car park, squeezing it gently to get her attention.
“we’re ok?” He questioned as she looked up.
“why wouldn’t we be?” She asked a look of confusion on her face.
“no second thoughts? I mean I’d understand if….” He was cut off as Duffy pressed her lips to his “idiot” she whispered “of course I haven’t. Why have you?” She suddenly started to panic as he quickly shook his head.
“good, because now. Now you’re stuck with me!” She reassured, “oh great” he teased as she leant over and placing another long kiss onto his lips.
She shook her head as she pulled away “pinks not really your colour” she giggled, wiping the lipstick from his lips as he smiled, kissing her again before she got out the car.
“although, that might have been amusing to see you explain” she joked leaning back into the car slightly before closing the door.
He laughed as he watched her walk into the hospital, grinned to himself as he recalled there night and how lucky he was.
Married Life
Part ~ 4 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "What are you doing here Ryan?" She questioned from the doorway as he turned to face her. "I told you, I came to see you. Sort all this mess out!" He responded as she shook her head "there's nothing to sort. It's over, surely me asking you for a divorce would have hinted at that?" She stated. He sighed "there's still time for us to fix this. Just give me another chance Lisa. I'm begging you, I'll change I promise!" She continued to shake her head. Why wasn't he getting the message. "I don't want to fix things, I just want you to sign the dam papers" she snapped through frustration. He was about to speak but she shook her head stopping him "don't even waste your breathe. There is nothing you can say that's ever going to make me change my mind." "There's someone else isn't there?" He guessed. He wasn't going to make this easy was he. She quickly shook her head and sighed. "this isn't about anyone else. Nor does this have anything to do with anyone else . This is simply me making a decision. One I should have made years ago. We are over Ryan. When are you going to realise that!" She was exhausted from the amount of times this conversation had been replayed. "Please darling, Whatever you want me to do I'll do it" he begged. "sign the divorce papers" she replied as he shook his head "Please lisa I love you" "Well I don't love you Ryan! Not anymore. " she responded a little more harshly than first intended, her tone of voice catching him off guard. "I haven't loved you for a long time. Nor will I start to again. You need to let me go. For both our sakes. Please, just let me go." Charlie glanced at he clock as the door bell rung it was 00.45 and he couldn't help but wonder who would be calling at his time of night. He opened the door and couldn't help but smile when he saw who was stood on the other side. "Duffy!" He was slightly shocked but glad to see her "I'm sorry, I couldn't sleep" she commented as he stepped aside to let her in. She smiled gratefully as he closed the door behind her and opened his arms to her, she moved closer and rested her head against his chest as he held her close in a hug. "everything alright?" He asked gently a few minutes later as they sat cuddled up together on the sofa. "just couldn't sleep, too much on my mind" she admitted glancing up toward him "you don't mind me just turning up like this do you?" She suddenly panicked that she'd woke or disturbed him "I know it's late" "of course I don't, you're always welcome. Anytime!" He reminded her placing a kiss onto her forehead as she smiled. "Will Ryan not wonder where you've gone?" He asked as she shrugged and tensed up at the mention of his name "he was asleep when I left. Jet lag." "he's in the spare room. And it's only for tonight!" "Duffy" he gave her a knowing look as she sighed "I'm sorry, I didn't know he was here. Or coming here" she added as he lent down to kiss her, mainly as an aid to silence her. "I know" he reassured pulling away as she rested her head back on his shoulder. "I told him " she piped up a few minutes later as he stroked his hand up and down her arm. "I told him that it was completely over, that he needs to sign the divorce papers and that there's no going back" "are you sure that's what you really want?" He questioned sadly as she glanced up at him. i don't love him, and I told him that. All I want is To be here with you, I've never been more sure of anything in my life" she reassured resting her hand on his cheek. "but I'm not going to tell him about us. He asked if there was someone else and I ignored him. I don't want to give him anything to use to make this anymore awkward" she added as he nodded knowingly. They sat in a comfortable silence, cuddled up together for what felt like forever before Charlie glanced down to see Duffy had fallen asleep against his chest. He let her sleep for about an hour, drifting off himself for a while before waking again to notice it had just gone 3am. "sweetheart" he placed a kiss onto her head as he whispered into her ear "you need to wake up" She murmured before slowly opening her eyes and grunting slightly "what time is it?" She asked through a yawn "just gone 3" he confirmed as she sighed. "I mean, you're more than welcome to stay but..." She nodded knowingly as she sat herself up. "I'm sorry for keeping you up" she added guiltily as they headed towards the door "will you stop apologiesing" he ordered "I'm here whenever you need me, besides there is no one I'd rather be with at 3 in the morning" he added with a smile. "Thankyou" she whispered. "I mean it when I say it Charlie, I really do love you" she reminded him as she lent up and kissed him. "I love you too" he whispered into her ear. Holding her close before allowing her to leave and return to home. Opening the door she was as quite as she could be as to not wake Ryan. Closing it behind her. She lent against it and let out a long sigh. Why did it have to be such a mess.
Married Life
Part 3 ~~~~~~~ After a lovely dinner the pair headed back to Duffy's apartment, a temporary place of residence until she'd decided on what to do. She placed a bottle and 2 glasses of wine down on the table and sat down on the sofa her legs curled up beneath her as she lent her body into his. They sat talking and reminiscing before Duffy placed her glass back on the table and turned herself to face Charlie. Moving as close to him as possible before kissing him. Charlie's hands moved to her back but The kiss only lasted a few seconds before the phone began to ring. "Ignore it" Duffy whispered kissing him again. "what if it's important?" "more important than this?!" She asked with a glint in her eye as she moved her hand to unbutton his shirt. Charlie smiled as he kissed her one again, more passionately this time as the phone rung out "see" she whispered before sighing as the doorbell rang instead. Charlie laughed as she sighed in frustration "I'll get rid of them!" She commented kissing him once more as she removed herself from his hold and went to open the door. "Alright, alright I'm coming' she shouted as the doorbell continued to ring. she opened the door and froze In shock when she saw who was stood on the other side "Ryan" "Hello Lisa, not going to let me in? It's freezing out here" he responded as she stepped to one side to allow him in. "What are you doing here?" She asked in complete shock. "I've come to see you of course. And Peter and the baby" he responded as she stared blankly. A noise from the lounge made Ryan realise she wasn't alone "you've got company?" He asked, glancing her up and down. Her attire which consisted of an emerald fitted dress, told him she wasn't just having a quite might in. Before she had a chance to answer Ryan had headed towards the living room. Charlie stood up upon hearing his voice and redone the buttons on his shirt just as The door opened. "Charlie?!" Ryan was relieved to see him stood in the living room and not another man, oh how little he knew. Duffy appeared behind him, a distant look in her eye, she just shook her head as Charlie glanced towards her. "how are you mate? It's been ages" Ryan smiled moving to shake his hand as Charlie replied politely "good, really good" he looked back towards Duffy as he answered "yourself?" "Hopefully will be now" he turned around to look at his wife, who simply looked straight through him, with little response. "Look ill leave you two to talk. You've probably got a lot of catch up on!" Charlie commented looking back towards Duffy who smiled sadly at him . "thanks mate, appreciate it!" Ryan commented, patting Charlie on the shoulder as Duffy looked down "we should grab a pint sometime" he added as Charlie simply nodded. "I'll see you out!" Duffy replied quietly interrupted them as Charlie headed towards the door, She followed, pulling the lounge door shut behind her as they went into the hall. "Charlie, I'm so sorry!" She whispered as he reached the door. "it's fine, I'll see you tomorrow!" He replied opening the door and allowing the cold air into the house. Duffy sighed sadly, she grabbed hold of his arm to stop him, as he turned back to face her, she lent forward into him, placing a long kiss onto his lips. "I'll call you later" she added pulling away and stroking his cheek "I love you" she reminded him as he smiled. She closed the door behind him, placing her head against the glass and sighing before returning to the lounge.
