Name: BowWow

Debut: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

What’s going on here? A Zelda character? It’s not Funky Friday YET! Is that what you’re thinking? Because it’s not what I’m thinking, since I am the one writing this post and therefore I know exactly what is going on here. 

BowWow as an individual may have debuted in Link’s Awakening, but as a Chain Chomp, he is still objectively a Mario enemy. And I think he is delightful!

In the Mario series, Chain Chomps already act like dogs, but here, they straight up ARE dogs! Don’t ask me how, because I don’t know! They're kept as pets by Madam MeowMeow (who, despite her name, owns no cats whatsoever). She says BowWow is very proud of his fur coat. Where is his fur coat? I do not know.

These Chomps live in a doghouse, and BowWow is even referred to as a “mutt”. It’s in a derogatory way, but to heck with that! Mutts are splendid! 

The one who calls him a mutt is King Moblin (he’s in charge of the Moblins), who has kidnapped BowWow for some unknown reason. When Link comes to rescue BowWow, King Moblin assumes he’s an assassin. Is that how dognapping works? Is it common practice to assassinate anyone who steals your dog? Ok!

Once King Moblin is defeated, it is time to take BowWow for a walk! His favorite food is, you guessed it, dangerous swamp flowers (don’t let your dog eat dangerous swamp flowers)! And since these flowers block the entrance to the next dungeon, BowWow is a crucial ally. The sign in the beginning of the swamp urges nobody to enter due to the potential danger, except BowWow, and I love that so much. Only a dog is allowed! Only one specific dog is allowed! Not even his owner. This dog may frolic unsupervised in the dangerous swamp.

BowWow is not the only dog in town, though! There’s also ChowChow, who does absolutely nothing. Sorry, ChowChow. I have nothing else to say about you.

But then there’s CiaoCiao! That’s what I’m talking about! CiaoCiao is female. Could you tell? Also, she can talk.

“Make-up! Jewels! Dresses! I want it all! Sigh... And some new accessories would be nice... Oh! That Ribbon! I need it! Will you trade for my dog food?“

Yep! Sure sounds like something a Cartoon Female Character would say! I love the idea of her giving you her dog food. Dogs using dog food as currency. Really the idea of dog food is so funny to me. I just imaging dogs saying things like “Mmm! Dog Food! My favorite!”

The dog food can then be traded to an alligator for some bananas, because this game is silly.
