13. If you had the chance to meet them, what is the first thing you would ask them? already answered this one about carlos ii so ill write about one of my other faves, paul i of russia! theres a lot id like to ask him... first of all i think id ask him what else he wanted to do during his reign if it hadnt been cut short by his assassination. >_>; paul had spent decades waiting for the throne & stewing in resentment so by the time he became emperor he had a lot of plans ready to put into motion. some were of course better than others. on one hand he reformed some outdated aspects of the catherinian military, established a national bank (which however was short-lived), made the succession law more stable/reliable, streamlined the government bureaucracy, & made some steps toward religious toleration. on the other hand he had some infamous wacky projects like heavily policing how people could dress, how buildings could be decorated, increasing censorship, & making social etiquette much more restrictive (though im not sure how much this was enforced outside of moscow, st petersburg, & the army). he did so much, for better or for worse, in less than 5 years of being emperor - iirc he signed several thousand edicts every year or something. king of micromanagement! workaholic icon! & no doubt he had ideas for the future that he didnt get to implement, so thats something id ask him about.

aside from political matters, id also want to ask him about his relationship with ekaterina nelidova! they had a cute little 18th-century polycule together with paul's wife empress maria; historians disagree whether their relationship was platonic or romantic & whether it was sexual or not, which im curious about too, but far more importantly... how did they like to spend time together? did they have inside jokes, pet names? what were they quarreling about that night paul ran out of nelidova's room as she was throwing a shoe at him??? I Need To Know!!!
